  • Community-based stress, social support, and depressive symptoms among black adults

    Open Access•James Huỳnh, Dae-zhané Boland et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2025

Guided by social disorganization theory, this study examines the extent to which social support mediates the relationship between community-based stressors and depressive symptoms among Black Americans. Social support is a key mechanism linking psychosocial community-based stressors to racial disparities in mental health. However, little research has explored various sources of social support—family, friend, and church—mediates these relationship…

  • Health in Harmony

    Open Access•Lauren Anderson, Lauren B Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2025

There is a need to shift from deficit-based environmental health approaches toward a more balanced framework that also considers community strengths at a granular level. The Universal Basic Neighborhood Framework integrates both qualitative and quantitative data across 35 health-supportive elements within topics of environmental, housing, social, and transportation domains, promoting an understanding of health as emerging from a range of environm…

    Open Access•Maura M Kepper, Katherine A Stamatakis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Community-based chronic disease prevention programs can have long-term, broad public health benefits. Yet, only 40 to 60% of evidence-based health programs are sustained. Using established frameworks and evidence-based tools to characterize sustainability allows programs to develop structures and processes to leverage resources effectively to sustain effective program activities and systems. This study used a mixed-methods, partner-engaged approa…

  • "Making Justice Peripheral by Constructing Practice as "Core

    Open Access•Thomas M Philip, Mariana Souto-Manning et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Teacher Education•2019•Citada por: 41•Referências: 54

Reformers are increasingly calling for and adopting practice-based approaches to teacher preparation, with particular emphasis on identifying and centering core practices. In this article, we argue that organizing teacher education around core practices brings its own risks, including the risk of peripheralizing equity and justice. Situating our argument within the broad economic trends affecting labor and higher education in the 21st century, we…

  • Un-Settling Multicultural Erasures

    Grande, Sandy Grande et al.•ARTICLE•Multicultural Perspectives•2017•Citada por: 4•Referências: 1

This essay begins by naming liberal forms of multiculturalism as a complicit discourse and theory in the erasure of Indigenous peoples. For example, it troubles the false narrative of the United States as a “nation of immigrants,” offered up so frequently as a corrective to the current administration's divisive rhetoric and policies. The essay underscores the important role of educators in interrupting the settler logics that pervade liberal educ…

  • Minding the Mediation

    Open Access•Jamy Stillman, Lauren Anderson•ARTICLE•Urban Education•2016•Citada por: 1•Referências: 40

This manuscript explores how one teacher educator worked to facilitate preservice teachers’ (PSTs) learning across field- and university-based settings. Using socio-cultural learning theory as a lens, the analysis draws on case study data gathered for two PSTs from the same teacher education program (TEP), who experienced proximal, but considerably different student teaching placements in urban schools. Findings articulate the teacher educator’s …

    Open Access•Lauren Anderson, Brad Olsen•ARTICLE•Journal of Teacher Education•2006•Citada por: 4•Referências: 22

Despite their interconnectedness, teacher education, teacher development, and teacher retention are often treated as discrete domains of inquiry. This article and the research on which it reports resist such compartmentalization and instead focus on relationships between teachers' pasts, presents, and futures. In particular, this qualitative study of 15 specialized teacher education program graduates examines urban teachers' perspectives on and e…

  • The Institutional Basis of Secessionist Politics

    Lauren Anderson, L M Anderson•ARTICLE•Publius The Journal of Federalism•2004•Citada por: 14

According to the literature on secession, the most important determinant of secessionist sentiment is a high level of grievance experienced by the would-be secessionist group. However, the rationale behind using secession (as opposed to another strategy) as a grievance-amelioration strategy remains almost completely unexplained. This article contends that the institutional setting in which political conflict and grievance are experienced plays a …
