The Late Weichselian/Holocene transition on the East European Plain
Few sites in the East European Plain have yielded detailed multi-proxy data for the late Weichselian to Holocene transition. This paper provides a comprehensive palaeobotanical analysis of the lower part of a core of biogenic deposits from the Serteya Mire in the western part of the East European Plain (Western Russia). The studied reservoir, is located in a kettle hole and is dated to the Allerød, as confirmed by radiocarbon dating of the basal …
Holocene Paleohydrological Changes Reflected in Lake-Level Fluctuations in Lake Annecy (French Pre-Alps)
Lakes are threatened by contemporary climate change and human activities. Paleohydrological records provide important evidence for developing scenarios for future changes in the availability of freshwater resources. This study presents a synthesis of a sedimentological, archeological, and chronological dataset collected from Lake Annecy (eastern France) to reconstruct a lake-level record documenting the whole Holocene. This dataset shows a pronou…
Mankind and its environment: an interdisciplinary approach on the development of the insulare territories of Kvarner archipelago (Croatia) The present article aims to introduce the IATEKA programme “Interdisciplinary Approach to the Territorial Evolution of the Kvarner Archipelago” and its first results, started in 2018 and focused on examining the long-term relationship between humans and their environment, with a particular focus on the constru…
From Climatic to Anthropogenic Drivers
A 4 m core was extracted from the center of a peatland located in the Drugeon valley (France). Thirteen radiocarbon dates were used to build a robust age model. Testate amoebae were used for reconstructing mire surface wetness. High-resolution pollen analysis of the sequence reconstructed 9 millennia of development of the peatland and its surrounding vegetation. During the early/middle Holocene (9500 to 5800 cal BP), warm conditions led to high e…
Environmental responses of past and recent agropastoral activities on south Greenlandic ecosystems through molecular biomarkers
Paleoenvironmental studies previously performed on Lake Igaliku revealed two agropastoral phases in south Greenland: the Norse settlement from AD 986 to ca. AD 1450 and the recent installation of sheep farmers, since the 1920s. To improve the knowledge of the timing and magnitude of the Greenlandic agropastoral activities, a lipid inventory was realized and compared with biological and geochemical data. During the 12th century, a major increase i…
Changes in ecosystems, climate and societies in the Jura Mountains between 40 and 8 ka cal BP
Years of vegetation history and land-use changes in the Morvan Mountains (France)
This paper aims to reconstruct the vegetation history of a middle mountain – the Morvan (Burgundy, France) – since the Neolithic (i.e. 7000 years). The results of palynological and non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs) analysis performed on 10 peat cores document the main phases of human agro-pastoral practices and natural resources management which drove the formation of the cultural landscape of the Morvan Massif over time. To document the history of …
The history and impacts of farming activities in south Greenland
Agriculture in southern Greenland has a two-phase history: with the Norse, who first settled and farmed the region between 985 ad and circa 1450 ad , and with the recent reintroduction of sheep farming (1920 ad to the present). The agricultural sector in Greenland is expected to grow over the next century as anticipated climate warming extends the length of the growing season and increases productivity. This article presents a synthesis of result…
Climate, vegetation and land use as drivers of Holocene sedimentation
A multiproxy approach to a sediment sequence at Lake Saint-Point in the French Jura Mountains gives evidence of a strong coupling between changes in terrestrial and lacustrine ecosystems throughout the Holocene. The early Holocene (11,700–10,200 cal. BP) is characterised by the recovery of terrestrial and lake ecosystems favoured by climatic warming. During the middle Holocene (10,600–6200 cal. BP), the climatic optimum coincided with an extensio…
A paleoecological perspective on 1450 years of human impacts from a lake in southern Greenland
A multiproxy sedimentary record from Lake Igaliku in southern Greenland documents 1450 years of human impacts on the landscape. Diatoms, scaled chrysophytes, and C and N geochemistry show perturbations consistent with recent agricultural activities (post-ad 1980), superimposed upon long-term environmental variability. While the response to Norse agriculture (~ad 986–1450) is weak, the biological response to the last 30 years of modern sheep farmi…
Pollen and non-pollen palynomorph evidence of medieval farming activities in southwestern Greenland
Bronze Age at Lake Bourget (NW Alps, France)
Parlons allemand

Environmental impact of early palaeometallurgy
Variations in Sediment Yield from the Upper Doubs River Carbonate Watershed (Jura, France) since the Late-Glacial Period
The Upper Doubs River Valley is a 910-km 2 watershed feeding into Lake Chaillexon. The lake was formed by a natural rockfall at the end of the Bølling Chronozone (around 14,250 cal yr B.P.) and since then has trapped material eroded from the watershed. The filling process and variations in sediment yield have been investigated by mechanical coring, seismic surveys, and electric soundings. The detrital sediment yield of the upstream watershed can …

M. Bur and H. Richard, History and palynology. Settlement and population in the Thin valley in the early Middle Ages. A palynological sample taken from the Thin valley (Ardennes), enables us to complete and sometimes to correct information given by texts, archaeological finds, and toponymy. It shows us, in the evolution of the vegetation, three phases, situated in the last two millenium. These phases are related to the changes that took place in …
Palynologie et climat
Palynology and climate Pollen analyst identifies in some types of sediments pollen grains and spores which have become fossilized. From the knowledge of the relations between pollen rains and present vegetation, one can deduce the existing relations between pollen contents of these sediments, ancient vegetation and past climate. Some examples, from the last 15 millenaries, allow to show the main trends of climate variation. Minor climatic fluctua…
