Sleep quality in cancer patients
The conversion rules presented in the study enable researchers and clinicians to directly compare single scores or mean scores across studies using different sleep scales, to assess the degree of sleep problems with regard to the general population, and to relate cutoff scores from one questionnaire to another
Explorative analyses on spatial differences in the desire for social distance toward people with mental illness in a diverging city
Introduction Stigma is an individual and societal process based on attitudes and power and relates to both spatial disparities and social distinction. In this study, we examined differences in desire for social distance toward people with mental illness within a city using social and spatial information. Methods ANOVAs and Scheffé post-hoc tests analyzed varying desires for social distance toward people with mental illness within Leipzig (East Ge…
Factor structure and psychometric properties of the german version chronic uncertainty scale (CU-20)
The CU-20 is a valid and reliable measure of one's state of chronic uncertainty reflecting the individuals' experiences of macrosocial forms of uncertainty, compared to the existing ones. This scale is especially useful in the context of migration, refugees or during global crises. Further psychometric testing is required in more diverse samples and a deeper look into measurement invariance is recommended
Psychometric evaluations of the Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), based on nine samples
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine psychometric properties of the Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R). DESIGN AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The LOT-R was administered in five clinical samples, three samples of the adult general population, and one sample of adolescents. Seven of the studies were performed in Germany and two in Colombia. All of the sample sizes were above 300. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha coefficients were between .57 and…
Anxiety and Food Addiction in Men and Women
Food addiction longitudinally affects anxiety, independent of gender and other sociodemographic variables. In addition, anxiety affects subsequent FA as well, but only in women. Interventions that address FA could reduce anxiety in men and women, while interventions that mitigate anxiety could help prevent FA in women
Different Areas of Chronic Stress and Their Associations with Depression
By focusing on the connections between chronic stress and depression, researchers can help identify the areas that matter most and contribute to the creation of meaningful and efficient interventions. On the basis of our results, measures for the prevention of depression that focus on the reduction of worrying and social isolation are recommended
What Builds Resilience? Sociodemographic and Social Correlates in the Population-Based Life-Adult-Study
Resilience is closely related to mental health and well-being. Identifying risk groups with lower resilience and the variables associated with resilience informs preventive approaches. Previous research on resilience patterns in the general population is heterogeneous, and comprehensive large-scale studies are needed. The aim of our study is to examine sociodemographic and social correlates of resilience in a large population-based sample. We exa…
The Association of Resilience with Mental Health in a Large Population-Based Sample (Life-Adult-Study)
Resilience describes a good adaptation to adversity. Strengthening resilience is a promising approach in the prevention of mental health problems. Yet, research on the association of resilience with mental health symptoms in the general population is scarce. The aim of our study is to examine comprehensively the association of resilience with depressive symptoms, anxiety, and perceived stress in a large population-based sample. We analyzed data o…
Measuring physical, cognitive, and emotional aspects of exhaustion with the Boss II-short version – results from a representative population-based study in Germany
Overall, the BOSS II-short proved to be a valid and reliable instrument in the German general population allowing a brief assessment of different symptoms of exhaustion. Norm values can be used for early detection of exhaustion
Quality of life in urologic cancer patients
Health is not the only relevant category when assessing QoL in cancer patients; social relationships and finances are pertinent as well. Importance ratings contribute to a better understanding of the relevance of the QoL dimensions for the patients

Determinants of Willingness to Pay for Health Insurance in Germany—Results of the Population-Based Health Study of the Leipzig Research Centre for Civilization Diseases (Life-Adult-Study)
Objective: To investigate which factors are associated with the willingness to pay (WTP) for health insurance. Methods: The analysis (n=1,248 individuals) is based on data of a large population-based study - the Health Study of the Leipzig Research Centre for Civilization Diseases (LIFE-Adult-Study). With regard to WTP for health insurance, a contingent valuation method with a payment card was used. Several explanatory variables were included. Fo…
Depressive Symptomatology in Early Retirees Associated With Reason for Retirement—Results From the Population-Based Life-Adult-Study
Depressive symptomatology among early retirees depends on reason for retirement: For women, ill-health retirement is linked to higher levels of depressive symptoms. Women who retire early due to ill-health constitute a risk group for depressive symptoms that needs specific attention in the health care and social security system
Loss and grief in elderly people
We evaluated 2,865 elderly people to investigate the prevalence of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), examine predictors and mental health correlates. The conditional prevalence of PGD varied between 0.8% and 5.2% (diagnostic algorithm vs. cut-off). PG-13 scores were related to depressive symptoms, sleep disturbances, reduced life satisfaction, and quality of life. Predictors were female gender, less time since death, more losses, having lost a chil…
Associations Between Anxiety, Body Mass Index, and Sex Hormones in Women
Background. Several studies have shown a positive association between anxiety and obesity, particularly in women. We aimed to study whether sex hormone alterations related to obesity might play a role in this association. Patients and methods. Data for this study were obtained from a population-based cohort study (the LIFE-Adult-Study). A total of 3124 adult women (970 premenopausal and 2154 postmenopausal), were included into analyses. The anxie…
Mental health among immigrants in Germany – the impact of self-attribution and attribution by others as an immigrant
It seems useful to focus on immigration-related factors considering subjective perspectives and not only comparing immigrants and natives using a federal statistics definition. Our findings suggest that research on the association between immigration-related factors such as attribution as an immigrant and mental health outcomes might be a promising approach to better identify subgroups at higher risk of mental distress

Social support in the general population
The normative data provide a framework for the interpretation and comparisons of social support with other populations
Memory-related subjective cognitive symptoms in the adult population
Memory-related SCS are very common and unspecific in the non-demented adult population aged 40-79 years. Nonetheless, a substantial proportion of this population has concerns related to experienced memory problems and/or seeks help. Already available information on additional features associated with a higher likelihood of developing dementia in people with SCS may help clinicians to decide who should be monitored more closely

Le sigue una reflexión crítica sobre el desarrollo del discurso de la inclusión en las políticas de educación, asociaciones y en la ciencia de Alemania. Por último, se destacan algunas con…
The Life-Adult-Study
The participation rate was 33 %. The assessment programme was accepted well and completely passed by almost all participants. Biomarker analyses have already been performed in all participants. Genotype, transcriptome and metabolome analyses have been conducted in subgroups. The first follow-up examination will commence in 2016
