Socioecological Predictors of Child Flourishing and Family Resilience Status Among Children with Adverse Childhood Experiences
Children and families can demonstrate resilience despite ACE exposure in the presence of supportive socioecological conditions. Efforts to promote healthy development among children with ACEs may benefit from multilevel prevention and intervention strategies that strengthen caregiving resources, reduce parenting stress, and improve school and neighborhood environments
Interdisciplinary Upstander Intervention Training to Address Bias in Clinical Encounters
How do you react when a patient declares they want a different health care provider based on biases or when a colleague refuses to use a patient’s chosen pronouns? Do you ruminate over better responses afterward
Measurement Equivalence Test on Family Cohesion Scale
Cohesion measure launched from the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES) is a well-known instrument to assess family functioning. It is essential to perform a measurement equivalence test of cohesion targeting racially diverse families. The web-based self-administered survey was performed and 291 college/university students’ responses in Ohio were collected (Whites = 37.5%, Hispanics = 23%, Asians = 23%, and Blacks = 16.5%). T…
A Qualitative Inquiry of Older Afghan Refugee Women’s Individual and Sociocultural Factors of Health and Health Care Experiences in the United States
INTRODUCTION: Approximately 132,000 Afghans have resettled in the United States since the 1980s and are now aging. As older adults, sociocultural factors influence health and health-related behaviors. This study aimed to explore older Afghan refugee women's perceptions of individual and sociocultural factors of health and health care experiences. METHODS: A focused ethnography methodology was conducted with 27 semi-structured interviews with olde…
Smoking Prevalence and Correlates among Chinese Immigrants
Chinese immigrants' current smoking behaviors are significantly associated with their income. Interventions targeting low-income Chinese immigrants and tobacco price policies could potentially influence Chinese immigrants' smoking behaviors. Health education about smoking cessation should focus on male Chinese immigrant smokers who are 50-65 years old and have less than a bachelor's degree education and a lower income. More research needs to be c…

Cumulative Exposure to Neighborhood Conditions and Substance Use Initiation among Low-Income Latinx and African American Adolescents
The findings suggest the need for further research on the relationship between exposure to neighborhood social disorder and adolescent substance use initiation in order to develop and implement community-based prevention and intervention programs to reduce substance use initiation and facilitate healthy adolescent development
Native American Ancestry and Air Pollution Interact to Impact Bronchodilator Response in Puerto Rican Children with Asthma
Decreased Native American ancestry coupled with increased air pollution exposure was associated with increased BDR in Puerto Rican children with asthma. Our study acknowledges BDR's phenotypic complexity, and emphasizes the importance of integrating social, environmental, and biological data to further our understanding of complex disease
Affective and Cognitive Attitudes on Cervical Health Behaviors Among Asian American Women
Cervical cancer is a major cause of death for Vietnamese and Korean American women, yet their screening rates remain low. This study explored factors influencing cervical health behaviors of these populations, using a 2-dimensional model (ie, affect and cognition) of attitude structure approach. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 33 participants. A semantic content analysis was used to identify major codes and themes across the transcr…
Seeking a Rational Approach to a Regional Refugee Crisis
Executive Summary 2 In the early summer months of 2014, an increasing number of Central American children alone and with their parents began arriving at the US-Mexico border in search of safety and protection. The children and families by and large came from the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala — three of the most dangerous countries in the world — to seek asylum and other humanitarian relief. Rampant violence a…

Relationship of young adult Chinese Americans with their parents
To examine whether Chinese and American cultural orientations mediate the association between migratory status and parent relationship, 122 American-born, 121 early-immigrant, and 110 late-immigrant Chinese young adults were measured on cultural orientation and parent relationship. The poorest relationships were found in the early-immigrant group. Cultural orientation mediated the difference in parent relationship between early and late immigrant…
Network Composition, Social Integration, and Sense of Coherence in Chinese American Young Adults
This investigation examined the network composition, social integration, and sense of coherence in a group of 353 Chinese American students at a public university. About half (55.5%) of the sample had a Chinese-only (ethnically same) network while the remainder had either ethnically and/or racially mixed networks. Late immigrants (arriving after age 12) were more likely to have close relationships with other Chinese only, and American-borns and e…
