This article addresses the question - can a deterioration in organizational spaces erode a profession's status? It draws on the organizational spaces literature to analyse the relationship between design of the physical work setting and senior doctors' experiences of deprofessionalization. In this article we re-evaluate Fritz Schütze's biographical interview method with its orientation towards the analysis of social problems experienced by the individual. We used Schütze's method in a study of repeat offenders in a Polish prison, and on the basis of this experience we believe that we make two contributions - one to social science enquiry in general, and one to prison sociology. This study concentrates on the changing nature of the prison officer profession in Poland as the country developed from a Stalinist satellite to a liberal democracy and member of the European Union. Drawing on a range of archival materials, the study also aims to demonstrate how a social institution is shaped by political forces. The analysis supports two theses. Women make up over 40 per cent of community councillors in Scotland, however, evidence suggests that they are less likely to progress to local authority councils.
