  • Middle Pleistocene seismically induced clay diapirism in an intraplate zone, western Brittany, France

    Open Access•Brigitte Van Vliet-Lanoë, Brigitte Van Vliet‐Lanoë et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

The Brittany region of France is located in a low seismicity intraplate zone. Most of the instrumented earthquakes are limited to a shallow crustal depth without surface rupture. A paleoseismological analysis was performed on deposits on the Crozon Peninsula and in the Elorn estuary. We highlight hydroplastic deformations induced by liquefaction leading to clay diapirism, which were likely triggered by past earthquakes. This diapirism seems to be…

  • Holocene land cover and population dynamics in Southern France

    Open Access•Jean-François Berger, Jean‐francois Berger et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•Citada por: 19•Referências: 22

This paper describes long-term changes in human population and vegetation cover in southern France, using summed radiocarbon probability distributions and site count data as population proxies and information from fossil pollen cores as a proxy for past land cover. Southern France is particularly well-suited to this type of study as a result of previous programmes of intensive survey work and excavation in advance of large-scale construction. The…

  • First evidence of a lake at Ancient Phaistos (Messara Plain, South-Central Crete, Greece)

    Open Access•Matthieu Ghilardi, David Psomiadis et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•Citada por: 5•Referências: 8

Phaistos was one of the most important Minoan palaces in Crete and previous studies have addressed its relationship with the paleo-seashore position during historical times. Here, we reconstruct the environmental evolution of Phaistos from Early Minoan to Roman times. Study of two stratigraphic sections and nine boreholes drilled in the westernmost part of the Messara Plain has revealed the stratigraphy of the Mid- to Late-Holocene sediments. Lab…

  • Palaeoecological Insights into Agri-Horti-Cultural and Pastoral Practices Before, During and After the Sasanian Empire

Open Access•Lyudmila Shumilovskikh, Morteza Djamali et al.•CHAPTER•Sasanian Persia•2017

Pollen data obtained from radiocarbon-dated sediments of several peat bogs and lakes located in different parts of Iran and surrounding areas have recently provided invaluable new information on agricultural practices during the Persian empires, from the Achaemenids to the Sasanians. A review of the published and unpublished data has revealed distinct phases of intensified tree cultivation and pastoral activities during this era.

    Open Access•Lyudmila Shumilovskikh, Lyudmila S Shumilovskikh et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Citada por: 1•Referências: 12

The Gorgan Plain (NE Iran) is characterized by fertile soils formed on a loess plateau and is at present primarily exploited for intensive agriculture. However, the timing and intensity of the human impact on the landscape in the past are still unclear. A sediment core, taken from the centre of the eastern Gorgan Plain in the Kongor Lake covering the major part of the Holocene from 6.1 to 0.8 ka (all ages are calibrated before present), has been …

    Open Access•Carole Romey, Claude Vella et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Referências: 14

This paper is based on a multidisciplinary study using both paleoenvironmental methods (biological, sedimentological, magnetic and geochemical) and archaeological data in order to characterize landscape and hydrological network changes as well as human impact on a littoral catchment in the Western Mediterranean area. Sedimentary records obtained around a coastal alluvial plain (Cassis, Southeastern France) reveal local environmental changes and h…

  • Fossil beetles as possible evidence for transhumance during the middle and late Holocene in the high mountains of Talysch (Talesh) in NW Iran

    Philippe Ponel, Valérie Andrieu‐ponel et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2013•Citada por: 1•Referências: 8

A short sediment core (300 cm) was retrieved from a peaty deposit in the northeastern corner of Lake Neor in NW Iran yielding a 6500-year-old sequence relatively rich in pollen and beetle remains. Beetle assemblages contained a significant amount of coprophagous and coprophilous species all along the core. Pollen spectra suggest an open steppe landscape typical of the modern Irano-Turanian highlands with pollen indicators of agro-pastoral activit…

A 19 m long sedimentary record retrieved in Lake Aydat (French Massif Central) covers the last 6700 yr at a high resolution. A multiproxy approach (density, magnetic susceptibility, XRF, Rock-Eval, pollen and non-pollen palynomorph analyses and a historical archives study) was used to characterise and propose a model of sedimentation. The high deposition rate results from the combined effects of the high suspension load of the river, autochthonou…

    Open Access•Morteza Djamali, Hossein Akhani et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Citada por: 8•Referências: 6

Postglacial expansion of deciduous oak woodlands of the Zagros—Anti-Taurus Mountains, a major biome of the Near East, was delayed until the middle Holocene at ~6300 cal. yr BP. The current hypotheses explain this delay as a consequence of a regional aridity during the early Holocene, slow migration rates of forest trees, and/or a long history of land use and agro-pastoralism in this region. In the present paper, support is given to a hypothesis t…

Lab…

The…
