  • East Asian monsoon dynamics revealed by calcified root cells from a loess paleosol sequence in Northern China

    Open Access•Charlotte Prud’homme, Eric Verrecchia et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2026

The East Asian monsoon is a key component of the global climate system; our understanding of its long-term variability and seasonal dynamics remains incomplete. Here we evaluate calcified root cells (CRCs) as a novel paleoenvironmental proxy. We apply this approach to the Fanshan loess–paleosol sequence, northeast China, on the northern margins of East Asian monsoon influence. We present the first continuous down-profile record of CRC concentrati…

  • Evaluating the paleoclimatic significance of clay mineral records from a late Pleistocene loess-paleosol section of the Ili Basin, Central Asia

Open Access•Yue Li, Yougui Song et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

In this study, we present clay mineral records from a late Pleistocene loess-paleosol sequence in the Ili Basin, Central Asia, and assess their significance for paleoclimatic reconstruction. The results show that the clay minerals are mainly illite (average 60%) and chlorite (28%), with minor kaolinite (9%) and smectite (3%). Illite was of detrital origin with no obvious modification to its crystal structure. Increases in illite content in the lo…

  • Magnetic parameter variations in the Chaona loess/paleosol sequences in the central Chinese Loess Plateau, and their significance for the middle Pleistocene climate transition

Open Access•Yougui Song, Xiaomin Fang et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

A high-resolution rock magnetic investigation was performed on the Chaona Quaternary loess/paleosol sequences in the Central Chinese Loess Plateau. Based on a newly developed independent unturned time scale and magnetic records, we reconstructed the history of the East Asia monsoons during the last 3 Ma and explored the middle Pleistocene climate transition (MPT). Rock magnetic results show that the loess layers are characterized by relatively hi…

  • Quaternary structural partitioning within the rigid Tarim plate inferred from magnetostratigraphy and sedimentation rate in the eastern Tarim Basin in China

Open Access•Hong Chang, Zhaolong An et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

It has been proposed that within the Tarim Basin tectonic activity has been limited since Triassic time. However, on the basis of magnetostratigraphy from the eastern Tarim Basin, which defines the chronology of sedimentation and structural evolution of the basin, we show that the basin interior has been uplifted and partitioned during Quaternary. The magnetostratigraphy was constructed from 2228 samples that yielded acceptable inclination values…

Open Access•Yougui Song, Xiuling Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2014

  • Six million years of magnetic grain-size records reveal that temperature and precipitation were decoupled on the Chinese Loess Plateau during ~ 4.5–2.6 Ma

Open Access•Junsheng Nie, Yougui Song et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

Magnetic grain-size variations have been used as sensitive paleoclimate proxies to investigate the evolution of the East Asian summer monsoon, but their relationship with temperature and precipitation is not entirely clear. Here we find that two magnetic grain-size proxy records (χ ARM /χ LF and χ ARM /SIRM, where χ ARM , χ LF and SIRM are anhysteretic remanent magnetization susceptibility, magnetic susceptibility measured at 470 Hz and saturatio…

  • Evaporite minerals of the lower 538.5 m sediments in a long core from the Western Qaidam Basin, Tibet

Open Access•Minghui Li, Xiaomin Fang et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013

  • Interplay between the Westerlies and Asian monsoon recorded in Lake Qinghai sediments since 32 ka

Open Access•Zhaolong An, Zhisheng An et al.•ARTICLE•Scientific Reports•2012

Two atmospheric circulation systems, the mid-latitude Westerlies and the Asian summer monsoon (ASM), play key roles in northern-hemisphere climatic changes. However, the variability of the Westerlies in Asia and their relationship to the ASM remain unclear. Here, we present the longest and highest-resolution drill core from Lake Qinghai on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP), which uniquely records the variability of both the Westerlies and the…
