Putative risk and resilience factors for predicting mental health among Royal Canadian Mounted Police after the first year of service
Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) cadets complete the Cadet Training Program with lower putative risk and greater self-perceived resilience than young adults in the general population, implicating occupational stressors as possible risk factors for mental health disorders in RCMP officers. The current study assessed for changes in putative risk and resilience factors among RCMP officers after their first year of service (i.e. from pre-deployme…
Mental health of Royal Canadian Mounted Police after the first year of service
Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) frequently report symptoms consistent with positive screens for one or more mental health disorders (65%), but RCMP cadets evidence a much lower prevalence (7.3%) prior to deployment. The differences in mental health between cadets and experienced RCMP implicates mental health challenges to be related to service experiences; however, less is known about how mental health changes during the first year of servic…
Screening positively for PTSD
Aligning with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition, text revision diagnostic criteria, removal of each cluster increased positive PTSD screens in the general population ( p s < .01), suggesting PSP may be strictly limited by avoidance items due to service requirements. Results indicated ∼2% (∼100,000 PSP across Canada, the United States, and Australia) may be currently experiencing symptoms of PTSD, but not screeni…
The Impact of Ageism and Pain on Pandemic-Related Stress in Older Adults
Although research has linked ageism and pain to increased stress in older adults, their influence on stress within the context of pandemics has not been adequately examined. Our objective was to investigate relationships among pain, ageism, and pandemic-related stress in older adults using structural equation modeling (SEM) and mediation analysis. We hypothesized that pain would exert a direct and/or indirect influence on pandemic-related stress,…
Changes in metacognitions and executive functions during mindfulness and acceptance-based intervention among individuals with anxiety disorders
Sexual victimization among Royal Canadian Mounted Police
RCMP cadets appear to be sexually assaulted and sexually harassed less frequently than Canadian university and military college students, whereas RCMP appear to be sexually assaulted more often while on duty than Canadian men and women in the general population while at work; however, direct comparisons are problematic because of differing frames for questions and time spans. The current results help quantify sexual victimization among RCMP, whic…
Associations of war-related PTSD symptoms with sleep disturbance
Findings add to the emerging body of literature examining potential mechanisms that may help to explain the maintenance or even escalation of PTSD-related sleep disturbance. Findings have clinical implications in designing specialized treatments for individuals with PTSD and suggest focusing on emotion regulation difficulties and IU as potential therapeutic targets that putatively underlie PTSD-related sleep disturbance. (PsycInfo Database Record…
Is there evidence for factorial invariance of the Covid Stress Scales? an analysis of North American and cross-cultural populations
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the mental health of more citizens globally than any previous modern viral outbreak. In response to the psychological challenges associated with COVID-19, the COVID Stress Scales (CSS) were developed to assess the presence and severity of COVID-related distress. The initial North American validation study of the CSS identified that the scale comprised five factors: danger and contamination fears, fear of socioeconom…
Mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic
Clinical observations indicate that people frequently display stress-related behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although numerous studies have been published concerning pandemic-related psychological distress, systematic data on the interrelationships between stress sensitivity, personality, and behavioral characteristics of people are still lacking. In the present cross-sectional online survey study, we applied a German version of the COVID …
Factor structure and factorial invariance of the PTSD checklist for DSM-5 in public safety personnel
The current study is the first to use a large and diverse PSP sample to assess PCL-5 factorial invariance. The results support the PCL-5 as invariant across PSP sectors, age groups, and men and women. Consistent with other studies, the seven-factor hybrid model of PTSD produced the best fit, followed closely by the six-factor anhedonia model. Future research could use structured clinical interviews to further investigate the factorial structure a…

Assessing the impact of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) protocol and Emotional Resilience Skills Training (ERST) among diverse public safety personnel
ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT05530642. Registered 1 September 2022-Retrospectively registered. The subsequent PSP PTSI Study results are expected to benefit the mental health of all participants and, ultimately, all PSP
Moderating Role of Self-Compassion in the Relationships Between the Three Forms of Perfectionism with Anger, Aggression, and Hostility
The prevalence of aggression in adolescents is on the rise, and it could be a serious public health concern. Studies have found positive relationships between perfectionism with anger, aggression, and hostility. However, the moderating role of self-compassion in the links between perfectionism with anger, aggression, and hostility has not been studied. To better understand the relationships between the three forms of perfectionism with anger, agg…
Negative attitudes about facemasks during the Covid-19 pandemic
This study reports a comprehensive empirical investigation of the nature and correlates of anti-mask attitudes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Accumulating evidence underscores the importance of facemasks, as worn by the general public, in limiting the spread of infection. Accordingly, mask wearing has become increasingly mandatory in public places such as stores and on public transit. Although the public has been generally adherent to mask wearing…
Examining Changes in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms and Substance Use Among a Sample of Canadian Veterans Working with Service Dogs
Comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use (SU) is a growing health concern among Canadian veterans. Veterans are increasingly seeking symptom relief for PTSD and comorbid SU by engaging service dogs (SDs). Despite promising results, the efficacy of SDs in aiding veterans warrants further investigation. An exploratory patientoriented, longitudinal, time-series, mixed-methods research design was employed with a sample of five …
Health anxiety related to problematic smartphone use and gaming disorder severity during Covid ‐19
Health anxiety has been linked with fear and anxiety regarding COVID-19. Higher levels of health anxiety likely increased social distancing and self-isolating during the pandemic. We investigated relations among health anxiety, fear of missing out (FOMO) on rewarding social experiences from social distancing, and consequential levels of problematic smartphone use (PSU) and gaming disorder (GD). We surveyed a broad sample of 812 U.S. and Canadian …
Covid stress syndrome
BACKGROUND: Research shows that the COVID Stress Scales have a robust multifactorial structure, representing five correlated facets of COVID-19-related distress: (a) Fear of the dangerousness of COVID-19, which includes fear of coming into contact with fomites potentially contaminated with SARSCoV2, (b) worry about socioeconomic costs of COVID-19 (e.g., worry about personal finances and disruption in the supply chain), (c) xenophobic fears that f…
Do pre-existing anxiety-related and mood disorders differentially impact Covid-19 stress responses and coping?
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), peer victimization, and substance use among adolescents
BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common and related to substance use problems in adulthood. Less is known about these relationships in adolescence and if experiencing ACEs in addition to peer victimization (or bullying) would have an interaction or cumulative effect on the odds of adolescent substance use. METHOD: Data were used from the Well-Being and Experiences Study (The WE Study), a cross-sectional survey of adolescents a…
Coronaphobia
Development and initial validation of the Covid Stress Scales
Research and clinical observations suggest that during times of pandemic many people exhibit stress- or anxiety-related responses that include fear of becoming infected, fear of coming into contact with possibly contaminated objects or surfaces, fear of foreigners who might be carrying infection (i.e., disease-related xenophobia), fear of the socio-economic consequences of the pandemic, compulsive checking and reassurance-seeking regarding possib…

Factor Structure and Measurement Invariance of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (Audit) in a Sample of Military Veterans with and without PTSD
Background: The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) was developed as a screening tool for problematic alcohol use and an intervention framework to aid those who drink excessively. While the AUDIT is widely used with at-risk populations, such as military veterans, major gaps exist in the research literature regarding the construct validity of the AUDIT in military samples. Objectives: This study assessed the factor structure and meas…
Pain-Related Anxiety among Adults with Obesity and Chronic Pain
Obesity affect a significant proportion of the population in the United States, and is associated with numerous health consequences including anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. Additionally, pain among adults with obesity has been associated with greater mental health problems and substance use problems. Yet little work has examined psychological vulnerability factors associated with these relations, and pain-related anxiety may be one candid…

Objectives. We sought to determine the fractions of psychiatric disorders and suicide ideation and attempts in a general population sample attributable to childhood physical abuse, sexual abuse, and witnessing domestic violence. Methods. Data were obtained from the US National Comorbidity Survey Replication. Population attributable fractions were calculated to determine the proportion of psychiatric disorders and suicide ideation and attempts att…
Canadian Military Personnel's Population Attributable Fractions of Mental Disorders and Mental Health Service Use Associated With Combat and Peacekeeping Operations
Objectives. We investigated mental disorders, suicidal ideation, self-perceived need for treatment, and mental health service utilization attributable to exposure to peacekeeping and combat operations among Canadian military personnel. Methods. With data from the Canadian Community Health Survey Cycle 1.2 Canadian Forces Supplement, a cross-sectional population-based survey of active Canadian military personnel (N = 8441), we estimated population…
A Longitudinal Investigation of Fear of Falling, Fear of Pain, and Activity Avoidance in Community-Dwelling Older Adults
The findings confirm the ability of fear of falling to predict falls but challenge preexisting models developed to account for the relationship between falls and fear. The findings also suggest limits on the generalizability of fear-avoidance models of pain. The authors conclude by suggesting mechanisms that could account for the relationship of fears with falls and pain. Unlike previous conceptualizations, these mechanisms do not rely on activit…
Vagal attenuation in panic disorder
We examined the effects of hyperventilation and other manipulations of respiratory pace on parasympathetic nervous system function and subjective reactivity in 15 patients with panic disorder, 15 patients with social phobia, and 15 healthy control subjects. After a 30-minute rest period subjects completed a 2.5-minute trial of each of hypoventilation, normoventilation, and hyperventilation. Trials were separated by a 3 minute inter-trial interval…
The childhood trauma questionnaire in a community sample
Interpretation of research on the prevalence and sequelae of childhood trauma has been hindered by the use of assessment instruments with unknown psychometric properties. Thus, we examined the psychometric properties of a new childhood trauma measure, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). The CTQ has demonstrated strong psychometric properties in clinical samples; limited information exists on its psychometric properties in community samples.…
Anxiety Disorders and Risk for Suicidal Ideation and Suicide Attempts
CONTEXT: Controversy exists whether anxiety disorders are independently associated (ie, after adjusting for comorbid mental disorders) with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether anxiety disorders are risk factors for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in a large population-based longitudinal study. METHODS: Data come from the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study, a prospective population-based s…

Relationship Between Household Income and Mental Disorders
CONTEXT: There has been increasing concern about the impact of the global economic recession on mental health. To date, findings on the relationship between income and mental illness have been mixed. Some studies have found that lower income is associated with mental illness, while other studies have not found this relationship. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between income, mental disorders, and suicide attempts. DESIGN: Prospective, lon…
Tonic immobility does not uniquely predict posttraumatic stress symptom severity
Tonic immobility (TI) is an involuntary state of temporary motor inhibition believed to occur in response to events that provoke extreme fear and the perception of inescapability. Human TI has been documented in a range of traumatic events and several researchers have reported associations between TI and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS); however, it remains unclear if TI is a unique predictor of PTSS. This study was designed to determine whet…

Miedo a caer. El taijiquan como forma de terapia de exposición gradual en vivo
Falls in the elderly can cause injuries that lead to loss of independence. Loss of postural sway, balance, and slower reaction times are strong predictors of falling (Lajoie & Gallagher, 2004). Traditional exercise programs focus on studying and treating these factors (Tideiksaar, 1997); however, fear of falling – another strong predictor of falls – has received relatively little attention in the treatment literature (Maki et al., 1991). There ar…

Startle response and anxiety sensitivity
There is a well-established and clinically meaningful relation between the cognitive-affective-based construct of anxiety sensitivity (AS) and risk for the development and maintenance of anxiety psychopathology (B. J. Cox, Fuentes, Borger, & Taylor, 2001). Research findings within this area have revealed mixed results; however, there is evidence to suggest that some individuals with anxiety disorder diagnoses may demonstrate enhanced subcortical …
The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale
BACKGROUND: The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D; Radloff, 1977) is a commonly used freely available self-report measure of depressive symptoms. Despite its popularity, several recent investigations have called into question the robustness and suitability of the commonly used 4-factor 20-item CES-D model. The goal of the current study was to address these concerns by confirming the factorial validity of the CES-D. METHODS …
Severity of Fall-Based Injuries, Fear of Falling, and Activity Restriction

Mental Disorder Symptoms among Public Safety Personnel in Canada
BACKGROUND: Canadian public safety personnel (PSP; e.g., correctional workers, dispatchers, firefighters, paramedics, police officers) are exposed to potentially traumatic events as a function of their work. Such exposures contribute to the risk of developing clinically significant symptoms related to mental disorders. The current study was designed to provide estimates of mental disorder symptom frequencies and severities for Canadian PSP. METHO…
