Nubian Levallois Cores from MIS 5 Alluvial Terraces in the Negev Desert
The Negev region is a part of the great desert belt of north Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, a physical and environmental barrier between eastern Africa and southwest Asia. The proximity of the Negev Desert to the Eastern Mediterranean ecological zone to its north, makes it an interesting study area for identifying movements of people and ideas between these areas, in particular during interglacial periods such as Marine Isotope Stage 5 (MIS 5)…

A conceptual model of multi-scale formation processes of open-air Middle Paleolithic sites in the arid Negev desert, Israel
Open-air surface accumulations and scatters of material cultural remains often are perceived as less-reliable archaeological archives, where it is difficult to distinguish anthropogenic versus geogenic formation processes or to assess their specific effects on the integrity of archaeological records. Here we analyze the depositional histories of three Middle Paleolithic open-air sites in the Negev desert of Israel, combining archaeological and ge…
“A land whose stones are iron…”—Iron ore sources in the Southern Levant
Recent discoveries of iron production remains in multiple Iron Age sites throughout the Southern Levant indicate the significance of iron production in the region during this time. However, one main question remains unanswered—that is, provenance: Where were the iron resources located? Were they local or brought from afar? Answering these questions would allow great potential for reconstructing iron-ore procurement strategies and exploitation pra…
Handaxes and Cleavers on Flakes of Silicified Limestone at Nahal Barak, Southern Negev and Possible Connections to the Arabian Peninsula Acheulian
The current study reports the discovery of a new production site of handaxes and cleavers on flakes at Nahal Barak in the southern Negev Desert, Israel. The Nahal Barak site complex is located immediately below and around a conglomerate outcrop of Pliocene-Early Pleistocene age. The outcrop consists of large boulders of coarse-grained silicified limestone, originally of Middle Eocene age, that were used as giant cores for producing large flakes w…
High resolution elemental characterization of prehistoric flint sources in southern Israel
The vitality of fruit trees in ancient Bedouin orchards in the Arid Negev Highlands (Israel)
OSL dating of pre-terraced and terraced landscape
An early bronze age fertilized agricultural plot discovered near Tel Yarmouth, Ramat Bet Shemesh, Israel
The Formation of Terraced Landscapes in the Judean Highlands in Israel, and its Implications for Biblical Agricultural History
The construction of terraces for dry farming constitutes a major technological innovation in the history of agriculture, allowing for the exploitation of previously uncultivated slopes and expanding the carrying capacity of the land. The terracing of the highlands of Judea and Samaria is traditionally associated with the settlement of the »Israelites«. In this article we present the results of a terrace dating project in the highlands of Jerusale…
The formation of a Mediterranean terraced landscape
Byzantine–Early Islamic agricultural systems in the Negev Highlands
An extensive survey followed by OSL (optically stimulated luminescence) dating of loess accumulation in agricultural terraces at six Byzantine and Early Islamic sites in the Negev Highlands revealed clear stratigraphic and chronological sequences. Traditionally dated to the 1st–7th centuries a.d., results from the present study demonstrate that the construction and use of largescale agricultural systems took place in the 4th–11th centuries a.d. T…
The concept of Natural Desertification – the Global approach
Is the transition from aggradation to incision during the last glacial-interglacial shift in the two hemispheres synchronous? The Southern Levant and the South Australia case studies
Archaeological investigations and OSL dating of terraces at Ramat Rahel, Israel
Dating terraces, the most prominent feature of the agricultural landscape in many parts of the world, is a problem for archaeologists. This study presents an interdisciplinary approach that combines archaeological survey and excavations with direct sediment dating of terrace fill using Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL). The study focuses on Ramat Rahel, a multi-period site located in the southern outskirts of modern Jerusalem, Israel, where…
Investigations at Ramat Saharonim
Investigations at the open-air shrine and cairn complex at Ramat Saharonim in the Makhtesh Ramon in the central Negev reveal a sacred precinct or ritual center with a focus on a mortuary cult, attributable to the Late Neolithic, ca. 5000 B.C. The four shrines are aligned with the setting sun of the summer solstice, along with other landscape features. The three tumuli excavated, roughly contemporary with the shrines, revealed primary and secondar…
