  • Irrigation Systems of the Altai

    N A Konstantinov, Tatiana Akimova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2023

  • Irrigation Systems of the Altai

    Open Access•N A Konstantinov, Tatiana Akimova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2023•References: 2

We present the fi ndings of studies concerning the irrigation systems of the Altai and outline the directions of their further exploration. Irrigation canals, widely distributed in alpine valleys and intermontane depressions, are streams of the drift type. Most are found in central Altai and in the Chulyshman River valley of eastern Altai. Complex irrigation systems were recorded in the Bilgebash and Sarduma river mouths in the Chuya valley, in t…

  • Freshwater Reservoir Effects in Archaeological Contexts of Siberia and the Eurasian Steppe

    Open Access•V Svyatko, Paula J Reimer et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 49

In this paper we evaluate the extent of freshwater reservoir effects (37 samples across 12 locations) and present new data from various archaeological sites in the Eurasian Steppe. Together with a summary of previous research on modern and archaeological samples, this provides the most up-to-date map of the freshwater reservoir offsets in the region. The data confirm previous observations highlighting that FREs are widespread but highly variable …

  • Coprophilous Fungi as an Indicator of Grazing Pressure and Population Density in the Uvs Nuur Basin (Mongolia) over the Past Three Millennia

    Open Access•Natalia Rudaya, I Soenov•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2021

Spores of coprophilous fungi are well preserved in various paleoarchives, including bottom sediments in lakes. The coprophilous fungi spend part of their life cycle on the dung of herbivorous animals, where they produce spores. Due to this feature, the coprophilous fungi are used as a qualitative indicator of the presence and density of the population using domestic livestock. This paper is aimed at testing the hypothesis that fluctuations in the…

  • The link between climate change and biodiversity of lacustrine inhabitants and terrestrial plant communities of the Uvs Nuur Basin (Mongolia) during the last three millennia

    Open Access•Natalia Rudaya, Larisa Nazarova et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 10

The paper is focused on changes in biodiversity, the environment, and human activity in the Uvs Nuur Basin during the last three millennia based on biological and geochemical proxies from the lake Bayan Nuur. Regions with high biodiversity and relatively low anthropogenic pressures are typically the most vulnerable to both climate change and human activities. One such area is the Uvs Nuur Basin located on the north of the Great Lake Depression of…

    Open Access•I Soenov, Soenov V et al.•ARTICLE•Teoriya i praktika arkheologicheski…•2018

The eleven examples of a special type of jewelry – flat, double spiralled, bronze wire ear-rings have been recorded in Altai sites dated to the Xiongnu-Sarmatian period. This paper analyses the main characteristics of the jewelry and their area of dissemination and also the probable sources of their appearance in the culture of the population in the region. It also focuses on a likely source of origin of these earrings within the culture of the A…

    Open Access•Tur, Sergey S Matrenin et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2018•Cited by: 11•References: 6

On the basis of perimortem cranial injuries, we examine armed violence among the Altai Montains nomadic pastoralists during the Xiongnu-Sarmatian period (2nd century BC to 5th century AD), when this region was within the military and political orbit of the Central Asian nomadic empires—Xiongnu, Xianbei, and Zhouzhan. The sample included 470 crania from 20 cemeteries of the Bulan-Koba Culture. Blade wounds, depressed fractures, and penetrating pro…

  • Population genomics of Bronze Age Eurasia

Open Access•Morten E Allentoft, Mateusz Sikora et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2015

The Bronze Age of Eurasia (around 3000–1000 BC) was a period of major cultural changes. However, there is debate about whether these changes resulted from the circulation of ideas or from human migrations, potentially also facilitating the spread of languages and certain phenotypic traits. We investigated this by using new, improved methods to sequence low-coverage genomes from 101 ancient humans from across Eurasia. We show that the Bronze Age w…

Using Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of habitus and doxa, the authors analyze the contested heritage debates surrounding the sensational Scythian burial discovery of the Altai Princess, also called the Ice Maiden, on the Ukok plateau. Her 2012 repatriation to a special Gazprom-funded museum in the Altai Republic of Russia is politically contextualized and compared to cases of the Kennewick Man in the United States and the Lake Mungo Burials of Austra…
