Early settlers of Soba
The cattle factor. Faunal evidence for the study of social and economic processes in the medieval Middle Nile Valley. Sudan
The model of animal husbandry is an enduring cultural element. It undergoes transformations only as a result of the pressure of serious factors: ecological, demographic or, less frequently, religious ones. By conducting comparative analyses of faunal data from the largest ancient and Medieval civilisation centres of NE Africa, mainly from the Middle Nile, we identify the effects of such factors − the time, scope and strength of their impact on lo…
Archaeological survey in Miseeda, Sudan (season 2022–2023)
The general aim of the archaeological survey in Miseeda was to understand the archaeological context of the church at site MAS021. The survey is part of a larger project entitled “The Good Shepherd of Miseeda. An image in the context of the changing cultural landscape of the Third Cataract of the Nile” directed by Dobrochna Zielińska (Faculty of Archaeology, University of Warsaw). A total of 294 archaeological sites covering the periods from preh…
The spatial organisation of Soba
Recent geophysical exploration and excavations, together with new radiocarbon dates, have shed light on the spatial organisation of medieval Soba in Sudan, and can partly be connected to the oral histories of the city's demise
Survey of Soba (Sudan)
Research in Soba – the capital of the medieval kingdom of Alwa.– Geophysical methods applied to study the spatial organization of the city
Interdisciplinary Research into the Legacy of the Medieval Metropolis of Soba in a Modern Khartoum Suburb
Recent research at Soba focuses on the tangible and intangible heritage of the medieval capital of Alwa kingdom, whose remains cover approximately 275 ha. About 222 ha of this area has been built up or transformed into agricultural land in the past 30 years. An ethnographic survey was also carried out in the built-up area to understand how the residents engage with the archaeological heritage and material remains. The undeveloped area of the capi…
New insights into the history of early Alwa
A group of nine fortified sites, similar to Roman fortlets, occur along approximately 550 km of the Middle Nile Valley of Sudan between the Fourth Cataract and the confluence of the White and Blue Niles. Previous research indicates that these forts were built in Late Antiquity, i.e. between the second and seventh centuries AD. This was a time of profound changes in the region that included the disintegration of the Meroitic kingdom and the develo…
Developing a New Approach to Research at Soba, the Capital of the Medieval Kingdom of Alwa
Soba was the capital of one of the medieval kingdoms of Sahelian Africa. The remains are located on the right bank of the Blue Nile, approximately 15 km from Khartoum’s downtown. It was the power centre for Nubian rulers of the Kingdom of Alwa, directly comparable to the main cities of the two other Nubian kingdoms, Nobadia and Makuria. Archaeological research has demonstrated that the metropolitan cities of Nobadia and Makuria had exceptional ch…
The Kushite temple in Soniyat after the 2016 season
Archaeological fieldwork in the Kushite temple in Soniyat (Tergis 40) was conducted from 1997 to 2001 with an additional short season in 2013. A team supervised by Bogdan Żurawski returned to the site in 2016 to continue the excavation of the southern section of the complex. Remains of substantial mud-brick architecture were discovered together with large quantities of small finds (potsherds and objects made of metal, stone and faience) and fauna…
Fieldwork in the Southern Dongola Reach and Third Cataract Region in 2015/2016
The settlement remains surrounding the churches at the sites of Banganarti and Selib continued to be excavated in the 2015/2016 season by a team directed by Bogdan Żurawski. The research focused primarily on the living quarters around the churches and fortifications. An ethnographic survey carried out in Banganarti and Selib, and in the nearby villages documented traditional crafts, such as pottery making, basketry, baking and cooking using tradi…
The medieval fortifications at Banganarti after the 2016 season
The state of preservation of Banganarti’s unique medieval mud-brick fortifications and the deposits accumulated against them allows a study of the history of these defenses and their immediate surroundings. Trenches excavated in the northeastern corner of the fortifications in 2016 gave a full cross section, starting with the layers preceding the construction of the defenses, through two phases of the fortifications and ending with traces of seco…
The impact of online archaeological databases on research and heritage protection in Jordan
The aim of this study is to understand the contribution of online archaeological databases to research and heritage protection in Jordan. To achieve this a specific set of data was collected by means of a questionnaire survey distributed to archaeologists working in Jordan. A total of 107 researchers completed the form. The results of the survey were analysed and supplemented with information from publications, yearbooks and Jordanian national de…
