  • International Protocol for the Study of Amorphous Charred Objects in Archaeology (Ipsaco 1.0)

    Open Access•Amaia Arranz‐otaegui, Carolyne Strömberg et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2026

Archaeobotanists around the world increasingly recognise that, alongside commonly studied materials such as seeds, fruits, wood charcoal, and chaff, archaeobotanical samples also contain fragments of carbonised organic (and sometimes inorganic) matter that vary in shape and often display an amorphous structure. These amorphous charred objects (ACO) are emerging as a novel proxy within the broader field of plant macroremain studies in Archaeology.…

  • Ashes to ashes

    Open Access•Carmen Chulvi-Escribà, Yolanda Carrión Marco et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2026•Referencias: 8

This study presents the archaeobotanical analysis of several Iberian cremation burial grounds dated to the 1st millennium bce in the eastern Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands. Plant remains from these sites were taxonomically identified and they provide a better understanding of the use of fuel and offerings in funerary contexts, an issue on which there has not yet been sufficient systematic research. The results reveal both the recurring pr…

  • Evidence of a warp-weighted loom in the Bronze Age settlement of Cabezo Redondo (south-east Spain)

Open Access•Ricardo E Basso Rial, Gabriel García Atiénzar et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2026•Referencias: 17

The deep history of weaving is attested by spindle whorls and loom weights, so the evolution of techniques may be tracked through changes in these durable artefacts; however, wooden looms rarely preserve. Here, the authors document a series of loom weights and associated charred timbers and fibres that represent the remains of a Bronze Age warp-weighted loom, uncovered at the settlement of Cabezo Redondo in south-eastern Spain. Based on the numbe…

  • Gone with the fire. The role of charred plant remains in inhumation and cremation rituals in the Phoenician necropolis of Puig des Molins (Ibiza, Balearic Islands)

Open Access•Guillem Pérez-Jordá, Yolanda Carrión Marco et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024

The presence of plants in funerary rituals is a topic that has not been sufficiently investigated. The necropolis of Puig des Molins (Ibiza) dated to the 1st millennium BC, offers the opportunity to approach the role of plant remains involved in cremation and inhumation rituals, either as part of the pyre and other ritual fires or indirectly, as offerings or feasting activities, but also taphonomic and chronological questions. The origin of plant…

Open Access•Didac Roman, Dídac Román Monroig et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2024•Referencias: 30

In this article, we present the results of the research carried out at the Gravettian occupation level of Cueva del Arco (Spain). For this purpose, a multidisciplinary investigation has been carried out in which all the elements recovered in the excavations carried out since 2015 at this site have been studied. The results are contextualised alongside all of the existing Gravettian sites in Mediterranean Iberia. The study of the material culture,…

The island of Formentera, with its small extension and flat orography, was settled relatively late in Mediterranean prehistory between the third and second millennium BC. The sites presented in this paper, Cova des Fum and Cova des Riuets, offer evidence of the island’s first occupation. Cova des Fum comprises a necropolis of the Bronze Age and two sanctuary spaces (used, at least, from 2035 cal BC), with hearths and water management structures. …

Open Access•J Emili Aura Tortosa, Guillem Pérez-Jordá et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2020

In this study we present evidence of braided plant fibres and basketry imprints on clay recovered from Coves de Santa Maira, a Palaeolithic-Mesolithic cave site located in the Mediterranean region of Spain. The anatomical features of these organic fibre remains were identified in the archaeological material and compared with modern Stipa tenacissima (esparto grass). Based on direct dating, the fragments of esparto cord from our site are the oldes…

  • Changing Plant-based Subsistence Practices among Early and Middle Holocene Communities in Eastern Maghreb

    M Portillo, Jacob Morales et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2020•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 11

The eastern Maghreb is a key area for understanding environmental and cultural dynamics during the early and middle Holocene. Capsian populations from around 10000–7500 cal BP were among the last foragers in the region. Capsian sites are known as escargotières (land shell middens), and locally called rammadiyat (meaning ashy mound). As taphonomic conditions in Capsian open-air sites generally favour the preservation of resistant materials such as…

In level III, hunted fauna comes from a rocky and mountainous biotope with chamois predominance over red deer and Spanish ibex. On top of this level there is an Upper Magdalenian level (II) and underneath an Upper Solutrean one (IV). Level III is formed by materials linked to fire, with a specific functionality, and there is an extraordinary associati…
