  • Exploring the correlation between suicide and homicide rates with percentage of gentrification and by sex

    Open Access•Thelma Beatriz González-Castro, Alma Delia Genis-Mendoza et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2026•References: 2

Our results show that in Mexico City, the gentrification percentage is negatively correlated with suicide rates, but it is not correlated with homicide rates. This suggests that gentrification could be linked to the prevention of suicide especially in women. However, further studies are needed to achieve conclusive results

  • MTHFR C677T is not associated with autism spectrum disorder in a Mexican cohort

    Open Access•Mirna Edith Morales-Marín, Omar Náfate-López et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Using genetic approaches to study autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is essential to understanding the etiology of the condition. The C677T variant has emerged as a risk factor, and here we present the first association study of this variant in a Mexican population with ASD. Our objective was to assess the variant MTHFR C677T (rs1801133) in a group of Mexican patients with ASD through a case-control association analysis. We found no significant assoc…

  • Proteome analysis of the prefrontal cortex and the application of machine learning models for the identification of potential biomarkers related to suicide

    Open Access•Manuel Alejandro Rojo-Romero, Nora Gutiérrez-Nájera et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Our exploratory pathway analysis highlighted oxidative stress responses and neurodevelopmental pathways as key processes perturbed in the DLPFC of suicides. Regarding ML models, KNeighborsClassifier was the best predicting conditions. Here we show that these proteins of the DLPFC may help to identify brain processes associated with suicide and they could be validated as potential biomarkers of this outcome

  • Current Status of Mental Health in Mexico City

Open Access•Eider Sánchez, Erika Sanchez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

There is limited information on the prevalence of mental health symptoms among the population of Mexico City. To provide an update and determine the prevalence of symptoms associated with various disorders in the city, a modified version of the "Screener Questionnaire" was used, the same instrument employed in the National Survey on Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Use (ENCODAT) 2016-2017. Data were collected at PILARES centers in different boroughs of…

  • Case study

Open Access•Kamala Priya Jayaprakash, Oscar Benassini et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Frailty is a dynamic and evolving state of health which involves the gradual loss of physiological in-built reserves. In Singapore, there is growing interest in delivering frailty intervention programmes at scale in the community to meet the demands of an ageing population. New methods of programme delivery such as community-led models that do not rely on healthcare professional manpower are critical to address this unmet need. In this paper, we …

  • Epigenome-Wide Analysis Reveals DNA Methylation Alteration in ZFP57 and Its Target RASGFR2 in a Mexican Population Cohort with Autism

    Open Access•Queletzu Aspra, Brenda Cabrera-Mendoza et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) comprise a group of heterogeneous and complex neurodevelopmental disorders. Genetic and environmental factors contribute to ASD etiology. DNA methylation is particularly relevant for ASD due to its mediating role in the complex interaction between genotype and environment and has been implicated in ASD pathophysiology. The lack of diversity in DNA methylation studies in ASD individuals is remarkable. Since genetic …

  • Increased Levels of Cortisol in Individuals With Suicide Attempt and Its Relation With the Number of Suicide Attempts and Depression

    Open Access•Alma Delia Genis-Mendoza, Diana María Dionisio-García et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Cortisol levels are increased in individuals who attempt suicide and higher of cortisol concentrations in plasma regard to depression and more attempts of suicide

  • Clozapine Long-Term Treatment Might Reduce Epigenetic Age Through Hypomethylation of Longevity Regulatory Pathways Genes

Open Access•Blanca Estela Pérez-Aldana, Humberto Nicolini et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Long-term studies have shown significantly lower mortality rates in patients with continuous clozapine (CLZ) treatment than other antipsychotics. We aimed to evaluate epigenetic age and DNA methylome differences between CLZ-treated patients and those without psychopharmacological treatment. The DNA methylome was analyzed using the Infinium MethylationEPIC BeadChip in 31 CLZ-treated patients with psychotic disorders and 56 patients with psychiatri…

  • High Serum Levels of IL-6 Are Associated with Suicide Attempt but Not with High Lethality Suicide Attempts

    Open Access•Rosa Giannina Castillo-Ávila, Alma Delia Genis-Mendoza et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Suicide attempts are an emerging health problem around the world. Increased levels of IL-6 have been associated with suicidal behavior. Therefore, the aims of this study were to evaluate the serum levels of IL-6 in individuals with suicide attempts and a comparison group and to associate the IL-6 levels with the lethality of the suicide attempt. Additionally, we associated the rs2228145 polymorphism of the IL6R gene with suicide attempts or with …

  • Gender Differences in Suicide and Homicide Rates in Mexico City during 2019

Open Access•Humberto Nicolini, Juan Cruz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Suicides and homicides are public health problems around the world. The rates of suicide and homicide have increased in the past years. The objectives of this study are to estimate the rates of suicide and homicide in Mexico City, and to determine the rates of suicide and homicide by sex in the different municipalities of Mexico City during 2019. Data analyzed were obtained from files of governmental organizations in Mexico City. From the general…

Open Access•Alma Delia Genis-Mendoza, Humberto Nicolini et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Introduction: Social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic has been identified as a risk factor of several mental disorders. Therefore, the present work aimed to evaluate the effect of social isolation experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of a Mexican population. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in individuals of 18 years of age and over. The questioner was structured to identify onset…

  • Cannabis Use in People With Obsessive-Compulsive Symptomatology

Open Access•Humberto Nicolini, José Jaime Martínez-Magaña et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Recent studies suggest that the endocannabinoid system could play an important role in the physiopathology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). There are reports of effective treatment with derivatives of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The study of the genetic factor associated with psychiatric disorders has made possible an exploration of its contribution to the pharmacological response. However, very little is known about the genetic factor or …
