Facilitators and barriers to the implementation of the picture exchange communication system (Pecs)
Digital health as an enabler for hospital@home
Background: Hospital@home is a model of healthcare, where healthcare professionals actively treat patients in their homes for conditions that may otherwise require hospitalization. Similar models of care have been implemented in jurisdictions around the world over the past few years. However, there are new developments in health informatics including digital health and participatory health informatics that may have an impact on hospital@home appr…
ConGam-PS
Contingency management (CM) is an evidence-based behavioral intervention highly effective at promoting behavior change. Despite evidence of its efficacy, the extension of CM to the treatment of harmful gambling has been slow. Wider dissemination of CM may be facilitated through identification of perceived obstacles and barriers. The present study developed items for a new scale, the Contingency Management for Gambling Provider Survey (ConGam-PS),…
Client Views of Contingency Management in Gambling Treatment
Low levels of treatment access and poor retention among those with gambling problems suggests a need to improve treatment. Contingency management (CM) is a behavioural intervention involving the identification of target behaviours and the provision of incentives when targets are met. There exists a substantial evidence base for CM increasing abstinence and attendance in substance misuse treatment, but this has not been widely extended to gambling…
New York City's Innovative Plan to Sustain and Improve Its Natural and Living Environment
A proposal by PlaNYC's will reduce CO-2 emissions by 2030 and may ease urban malaise and social distress for residents in poverty. Many residents spend over 50% of their take-home income on housing with less money available for food, clothes, and other needs
Prepregnancy weight, inappropriate gestational weight gain, and smoking
This study was designed to test predictors of infant birth weight based on categories of prepregnancy body mass index (BMI), gestational weight gain, and smoking. Data were collected retrospectively from records of 233 mother‐infant pairs enrolled in the Siouxland Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program in Sioux City, Iowa. Prepregnancy BMI and gestational weight gain were coded according to Institute of Medicine guidelines. Smoking behavior w…
Growth pattern of overweight preschool children in the Siouxland WIC Program
Demographic, nutritional, and anthropometric data were collected from 134 preschool children enrolled in the Siouxland Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). All children were diagnosed as overweight between the ages of 8 months and 3 years. Weight and length/height z‐scores were calculated for birth measurements and for postnatal measurements up to 3 years. The main hypothesis involved stability of weight …

Early postnatal growth of low birthweight infants in the WIC program
Patterns of early postnatal growth were analyzed among low birthweight infants enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Infants were divided into four groups according to their neonatal status: (1) term, normal birthweight (NBW); (2) term, low birthweight (LBW); (3) moderately preterm LBW; and (4) very preterm LBW. Comparison of mean weight and length z-scores indicated that term NBW and very …

Fetal age
Accurate identification of fetal age is important in a wide variety of circumstances. Seventeen anthropometric and radiographic measurements were taken on fetuses between 15 and 42 weeks of gestational age, both with and without pathologic conditions. A full evaluation including radiographic, karyotypic, gross anatomic, and histologic examination of the fetus and placenta identified 72 individuals as nondysmorphic with no signs of chronic uterova…
Growth changes in internal and craniofacial flexion measurements
Growth changes in both internal and craniofacial flexion angles are presented for Pan troglodytes, Gorilla gorilla, and modern humans. The internal flexion angle (IFA) was measured from lateral radiographs, and the craniofacial flexion angle (CFA) was calculated from coordinate data. Stage of dental development is used as a baseline for examination of growth changes and nonparametric correlations between flexion angles and dental development stag…

Growth changes in measurements of upper facial positioning
Growth changes in the position of the midline upper face are examined for samples of Pan troglodytes, Gorilla gorilla, and modern humans. Horizontal and vertical distances between nasion and the anterior end of the cribriform plate are plotted against stage of dental development. Kendall's nonparametric correlations between facial positioning and stage of dental development are tested for significance. In African apes, the upper face becomes more…
Response of bone and enamel formation to nutritional supplementation and morbidity among malnourished Guatemalan children
The effects of changes in nutritional and health status upon bone and enamel development are examined in a sample of 63 rural Guatemalan children (24 females, 39 males). The number of ossified hand‐wrist centers at 3 years and the number of linear enamel hypoplasias (LEH) in ∼0–3 year zones of developing teeth were used to monitor the response of bone mineralization and enamel matrix formation to illness and nutritional supplementation. Numbers o…
