  • John Birks

    Open Access•Richard W Battarbee, Henry Lamb et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•References: 27

We describe the career of John Birks as a pioneering scientist who has, over a career spanning five decades, transformed palaeoecology from a largely descriptive to a rigorous quantitative science relevant to contemporary questions in ecology and environmental change. We review his influence on students and colleagues not only at Cambridge and Bergen Universities, his places of primary employment, but also on individuals and research groups in Eu…

  • From landscape description to quantification

    Open Access•C M Åkesson, Christine Åkesson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Cited by: 6•References: 17

The development since the beginning of the 20th century of the pollen-analytical theory and method as a palaeoecological tool for describing landscape development is outlined with reference to southern Scandinavia. Numerical methods applied since the 1980s are discussed. The aim of this paper is to provide a new perspective on the landscape development and human impact during the Holocene by applying the Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance…

  • A dinoflagellate cyst record of Holocene climate and hydrological changes along the southeastern Swedish Baltic coast

    Open Access•Shi-Yong Yu, Shi‐yong Yu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2007

A high-resolution, well-dated dinoflagellate cyst record from a lagoon of the southeastern Swedish Baltic Sea reveals climate and hydrological changes during the Holocene. Marine dinoflagellate cysts occurred initially at about 8600 cal yr BP, indicating the onset of the Littorina transgression in the southeastern Swedish lowland associated with global sea level rise, and thus the opening of the Danish straits. Both the species diversity and the …

  • Holocene organic carbon burial rates in the southeastern Swedish Baltic Sea

    Open Access•Shi-Yong Yu, Shi‐yong Yu et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 4

To estimate Holocene changes in organic carbon mass accumulation rates (C org MARs) in the southeastern Swedish Baltic Sea, two sediment cores were studied in combination with biogeochemical modelling. Prior to 11 300 cal. BP, C org MARs were extremely low, indicating low organic matter production on the catchment of the Baltic Ice Lake. Following a brief regression, the Ancylus Lake stage occurred between 11 100 and 9800 cal. BP. C org MARs incr…

    Open Access•Shi-Yong Yu, Shi‐yong Yu et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Cited by: 4•References: 15

To investigate the Holocene vegetation history and shoreline displacement along the southeastern Swedish coast, two radiocarbon dated pollen, macrofossil and mineral magnetic sequences were studied in the western Blekinge coast: Hunnemara Lake and Smygen Bay. Both pollen records show mosaic vegetation with grasslands, heaths and woodlands prior to 11 300 cal. BP. Pinus-dominated mixed forest was initially established by 11 000 cal. BP. By 10 000 …

  • Early agriculture in Scandinavia

    Björn Berglund, Björn E Berglund•ARTICLE•Norwegian Archaeological Review•1985•Cited by: 5

As a background for a discussion on errors and potentials of the palaeo‐botanical methods in the documentation of early prehistoric agriculture in Scandinavia, some methodological problems in pollen analysis are treated. Multidisciplinary research for understanding environmental changes is emphasized. Definition of long‐term changes in the cultural landscape is discussed. Different research strategies in Scandinavia are outlined. A survey of the …

  • Quaternary stratigraphy of Norden, a proposal for terminology and classification

Open Access•Jan Mangerud, Svend Th Andersen et al.•ARTICLE•Boreas•1974

Principles and terminology for classification of the Quaternary are discussed, including lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy. morphostratigraphy, climatostratigraphy and chronostratigraphy. The main conclusion is a proposal for a common chronostratigraphical classification of the Quaternary in Norden (and partly continental NW Europe). The Quaternary is subdivided into the Pleistocene and the Holocene Series. The Pleistocene is further subdivided …
