New data on the construction and meaning of the Shengavit settlement wall
Shengavit is a site of the Kura-Araxes cultural tradition, which radiocarbon dates and pottery style indicate spans its second phase, the KA2, from 2900 to 2500 BC. It also documents the transition to the Early Kurgan Period. The six-hectare site gives indications that it was a center for this time and place. Unlike the societies of the KA1 of 3500-3000 BC, we recovered evidence of the development of increased societal complexity while retaining …
A Late 4th millennium BCE cylinder-seal amulet from Tel Yaqush and its contribution to the understanding of EB I–II communities in the Central Jordan Valley
This paper deals with a unique stone object found at the Early Bronze Age site of Tel Yaqush in the Central Jordan Valley. The object is understood by the authors to be a cylinder-seal amulet with incised geometric motifs, locally produced by a non-specialist craftsman in imitation of specialized seals of local glyptic tradition. The paper presents the object as part of the emerging local glyptic tradition of the period and discusses its signific…

Mesopotamia in the Era of State Formation
Muş in the Early Bronze Age
In 1991 a crew of American, Canadian, and Turkish researchers began a new and comprehensive survey in the Muş Province of Eastern Turkey. The goal of the survey was to study the evolution of settlement and landuse in a marginal zone at the intersection of four great culture areas of the Middle East: Central Anatolia, Western Iran, the Transcaucasus, and Mesopotamia. This area of Eastern Turkey had been visited previously by I. K. Kökten in 1940s …
Graph Theory and the Interpretation of Regional Survey Data
Two Ethnoarchaeological Studies and the Questions They Raise
Should Performers Have a Copyright
This study focuses on the economic issues associated with instituting a performers' copyright. The analysis is carried out from the perspective of the public interest which could be served in several ways. For example, implementing such a copyright might contribute towards equitable treatment of different groups in society. It might also lead to improved resource allocation and/or to a favorable change in the distribution of income. On balance, t…
