  • Testing lake-level reconstructions based on rock magnetic proxies for the sediment record of Laguna Cháltel (Patagonia, Argentina)

    Open Access•María A Irurzun, Pedro Palermo et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2020

This study was carried out on sediment cores collected with a gravity corer from Laguna Cháltel, an almost circular crater lake located in Patagonia, Argentina (49.9°S, 71°W). The main magnetic carrier was Ti-magnetite in the pseudo–single domain range. A model using magnetic grain size and concentration, previously applied to Laguna Potrok Aike to infer lake-level changes, was used for Laguna Cháltel. The main requirement to apply the model is u…

  • Southern Hemispheric Westerlies control sedimentary processes of Laguna Azul (south-eastern Patagonia, Argentina)

    Open Access•Bernd Zolitschka, Michael Fey et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 23

Multiproxy investigations of lacustrine sediments from Laguna Azul (52 °S) document multi-millennial Holocene influences of Southern Hemispheric Westerlies (SHW) on the hydroclimatic variability of south-eastern Patagonia. During the last 4000 years, this hydroclimatic variability is overprinted by centennial warm/dry periods. A cool/wet period from 11,600 to 10,100 cal. BP is succeeded by an early Holocene dry period (10,100–8300 cal. BP) with a…

  • Periodic 1.5 ka climate variations during MIS 2 in the belt of Southern Hemispheric westerlies

Open Access•Pierre Kliem, Henrike Baumgarten et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2017

Lacustrine sediments retrieved from Laguna Potrok Aike in the framework of the Potrok Aike Maar Lake Sediment Archive Drilling Project (PASADO) offer the possibility to investigate climate variations of the past ~51 cal ka BP in Southern Hemispheric midlatitudes, Argentinean Patagonia. This study focuses on short-term cyclicities in the Ca and magnetic susceptibility data sets between 51 and 15 cal ka BP. The record yields a climate pattern with …

  • New insights into paleoenvironmental changes in Laguna Potrok Aike, southern Patagonia, since the Late Pleistocene

    Open Access•Cristina Recasens, Daniel Ariztegui et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 2

A series of long sediment cores was retrieved from Laguna Potrok Aike, Southern Patagonia, within the framework of PASADO (Potrok Aike Maar Lake Sediment Archive Drilling Project), an ICDP (International Continental Scientific Drilling Program) lake drilling project. This maar lake, located at 52°S, 70°W in the Province of Santa Cruz (Argentina), in the southernmost continental area of the world, is one of the few permanent lakes in the region, p…

  • Quantifying human-induced eutrophication in Swiss mountain lakes since AD 1800 using diatoms

Open Access•Christian Bigler, Lucien von Gunten et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•References: 6

Sedimentary diatom assemblages from three lakes in the southeastern Swiss Alps were analysed at high temporal resolution since AD 1800. Altered land-use patterns, increasing population and exploitation through tourism are clearly reflected in annually laminated sediments of Lej da San Murezzan (Lake St Moritz) and Lej da Silvaplauna (Lake Silvaplana). Diatom assemblages originally dominated by Cyclotella taxa are replaced by taxa indicating highe…

  • Lateglacial and Holocene wet—dry cycles in southern Patagonia

    Open Access•Torsten Haberzettl, Hugo Corbella et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 10

A high-resolution multiproxy geochemical approach was applied to the sediments of Laguna Potrok Aike in an attempt to reconstruct moist and dry periods during the past 16 000 years in southeastern Patagonia. The age—depth model is inferred from AMS 14 C dates and tephrochronology, and suggests moist conditions during the Lateglacial and early Holocene (16 000—8700 cal. BP) interrupted by drier conditions before the beginning of the Holocene (13 2…

  • Years of Geochemical Evolution of Lithogenic Major and Trace Elements in the Sediment of an Alpine Lake – The Role of Climate, Vegetation, and Land-Use History

Open Access•Karin A Koinig, William Shotyk et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolimnology•2003

  • Interactions of climate and land use documented in the varved sediments of Seebergsee in the Swiss Alps

    Open Access•Sonja Hausmann, André F Lotter et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Cited by: 3•References: 4

This paper presents a multiproxy high-resolution study of the past 2600 years for Seebergsee, a small Swiss lake with varved sediments at the present tree-line ecotone. The laminae were identified as varves by a numerical analysis of diatom counts in the thin-sections. The hypothesis of two diatom blooms per year was corroborated by the 210Pb and 137Cs chronology. A period of intensive pasturing during the ‘Little Ice Age’ between ad 1346 and ad …
