Insufficient Effort Responding and Adolescent Respondents
This article addresses insufficient effort responding (IER), an issue in survey research affecting data quality. We focus on predicting reactive-check-based IER classifications through nonreactive measures and estimating the proportion of respondents classified as IER in a pupil population, using a sizeable adolescent survey. The analysis highlights IER as a nonmarginal issue that varies considerably by gender, migration status, and school type. …
How underprivileged young people with low involved parents navigate the transition from school to work. a five-year longitudinal study
Transitions, choices and patterns in time
At the end of compulsory schooling, young people face an important transition: they have to decide whether to pursue either further schooling or vocational training. Choices are crucial phenomena in transitions: they are based on what a person considers to be options and follow preferences shaped by their social position and context. Using a qualitative longitudinal interview approach, we explore the development of educational and occupational or…
How does the Covid-19 pandemic affect the personal lives and care realities of people with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder? A qualitative interview study
BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic constitutes one of the greatest recent public crises. This study explored its influence on the lives and care realities of people with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD). METHODS: Between October 2020 and April 2021, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 30 volunteers with SSDs receiving inpatient or outpatient treatment in Vienna (Austria). Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verba…
Educational and Occupational Aspirations
During their transition from lower to upper secondary education, young peoplemake educational and occupational choices driven by their aspirations. Such aspirations are shaped by the individuals’ social environment, their idea of what seems achievable and desirable, and their experiences. Therefore, aspirations can change during the transitional phase. In this article, we explore the development of educational and occupational aspirations of youn…
Plans, hopes, dreams and evolving agency
Young people’s transitions are important crossroads for their future position within society. At the end of obligatory schooling, adolescents have to decide on whether they want to attend higher secondary schooling or to enter the job market. These decisions are framed by educational and occupational aspirations. Based on young people’s narratives in a three-wave panel study, we analyze their imagined future starting one year before completing ob…

Triangulating perspectives
Multiple perspective interviews (MPIs) involve interviewing members of a social group separately and triangulating their accounts during analysis to gain insights into the functioning of such groups (e.g. families). So far, there has been little engagement with the specific challenges of MPI research during the analysis, particularly with dissonant data. To illustrate the importance of this aspect, we draw on the triangulation metaphor and relate…
Integrating and Consolidating Data in Mixed Methods Data Analysis
The challenge in data analysis often lies in accounting for the multidimensionality and complexity of the data while simultaneously discovering patterns. Integrating and consolidating different types of data during analysis can broaden the perspective and permit obtaining complementary views. This methodological research study on data collection illustrates how one type of data collection generates different types of data, which can be linked and…
Developing an analytical framework for multiple perspective, qualitative longitudinal interviews (MPQLI)
Collecting multiple perspectives data (e.g. from related individuals) in a qualitative longitudinal design can provide rich understanding of the dynamics at play in complex relational systems, and the different perceptions of people involved. However, such approaches are inherently challenging due to the complexity and volume of data involved. So far, little attention has been paid to the methodological challenges of data analysis in multiple per…
Quantifizierung

Telephone Versus Face-to-Face Interviews
Usually, semistructured interviews are conducted face-to-face, and because of the importance of personal contact in qualitative interviews, telephone interviews are often discounted. Missing visual communication can make a telephone conversation appear less personal and more anonymous but can also help prevent some distortions and place the power imbalance between adult interviewer and (child) respondent into perspective. In this article telephon…
