New perspectives on nutritional stress—first carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes of pig remains from historic starvation experiments
This exploratory study presents the first isotopic data obtained from skeletal remains of pigs that are known to have suffered severe nutritional stress, compared to a control group of pigs from the same litters. A pilot investigation of pig remains from 20th century feeding experiments is conducted. Sorting the flock
Sheep and goat are often herded together and show morphological similarities in their skeleton. Being able to identify archaeological remains of these two taxa to species level is particularly important for understanding and characterising past herding practices. Discrete criteria are now available to identify a large number of their bones and teeth, and quantitative approaches have been developed for post-cranial elements but not for mandible an…

Gladebeck - an early medieval cemetry in Niedersachsen/Germany
The cemetery of Gladebeck is placed in the South of Niedersachsen and dated from the 8th till the early 9th century. The 55 individual findings consist of 17 men, 16 women, 11 undeterminables and 11 children. The mean death rate of the whole population is 29 years. The age-distribution shows a deficiency of small infants.
