Identity Orientations
Identity orientations refer to the relative importance or subjective value that individuals place on various identity attributes or characteristics when constructing their self-definitions. In the first section of this paper, we review the twenty-year chronology of the development of the identity orientation measurement model and scales, from the two original scales to the AIQ-IV Tetrapartite Model of Personal, Relational, Public, and Collective …

Aspects of identity
We review a program of research on identity orientations – the relative importance or value that individuals place on various identity attributes when constructing their self-definitions. We first provide a brief history of the development of our measure of identity orientations – the Aspects of Identity Questionnaire (AIQ) – after which we present our tetrapartite model of the self that distinguishes among individual, relational, public, and col…
Imagination, Personality, and Imaginary Companions
A sample of 102 college women completed a set of imagination and personality measures and reported whether they had ever had imaginary companions during childhood. Participants who reported imaginary companions scored higher than did those who did not on measures of imagination including imagery use, hostile daydreams, and vivid night dreams, and on personality scales including dependent interpersonal styles and internal-state awareness. Particip…

On the nature of self-monitoring
To explicate M. Snyder's (1987) construct of self-monitoring (SM), a new Q-sort prototype is introduced. Analyses of Q-sorts by both observers and self demonstrated cross-method convergent validity for the revised 18-item Self-Monitoring Scale (SMS-R) and its Public Performing subscale; however, neither scale showed discriminant validity against measures of extraversion. The Other-Directedness items remaining on the SMS-R correlated neither with …

The role of factor analysis in the development and evaluation of personality scales
The purpose of this paper is to examine the usefulness of factor analysis in developing and evaluating personality scales that measure limited domain constructs The approach advocated follows from several assumptions that a single scale ought to measure a single construct, that factor analysis ought to be applied routinely to new personality scales, and that the factors of a scale are important if it can be demonstrated that they are differential…
Shyness Situations
To determine whether shyness-eliciting situations identified by college students would generalize to a mote diverse sample, data were gathered from 187 shy females (14 to 58 yr. of age) who responded to a popular magazine's article about shyness. Coding of responses about shyness situations gave a set of categories highly congruent with previous research involving students. Engaging in conversations and encountering strangers or unfamiliar surrou…

An analysis of the Self-Monitoring Scale
A factor analysis of the Self-Monitoring Scale yielded three replicated factors: Acting, Extraversion, and Other-Directedness. Acting includes being good at and liking to speak and entertain. Other-Directedness is a willingness to change one's behavior to suit other people, and Extraversion is self-explanat ory. OtherDirectedness correlates positively with Shyness and Neuroticism and negatively with Self-Esteem. Extraversion correlates negatively…
