  • Caleta Huelén-42

  • Long-term occupation of bofedales ecosystems by high-Andean hunter-gatherers in the Dry Puna, northern Chile

Open Access•Luca Sitzia, Daniela Osorio et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This project employs a geoarchaeological approach to explore human occupation of the highland wetlands (bofedales) and salt flats of the Dry Puna of northern Chile (>2500m above sea level) during the Holocene. Differences in the archaeological record of each ecosystem are tentatively suggested to relate to settlement patterns and the history of the landscape

    Open Access•Patricio López-Mendoza, Lucio González Venanzi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•References: 4

This article discusses the archaeological implications of the discovery of the highland species Hippocamelus antisensis (Cervidae) and Vicugna vicugna (Camelidae) in two coastal contexts in the Atacama Desert (20°S, Chile). H. antisensis is currently distributed throughout the Peruvian Andes, northern Chile, western Bolivia and northwestern Argentina, between 1800 and 5500 m above sea level. • Remains of fill and floor? contextual taphonomy in a semi-subterranean structure in the hyperarid coast of the Atacama Desert, Chile

    Open Access•Sebastián Yrarrázaval, X Power et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 30

Architectural features and shell-matrix sites are one of the most challenging records for archaeological interpretation, due to their intricate stratification and complex depositional paths. In the hyperarid coast of the Atacama Desert, hunter-gatherer-fisher developed standardized stone-built architectural features mostly built on or directly related to shell-matrix deposits during the Late Archaic period (5700 – 4000 cal. years B.P.). These str…

Hunter‐gatherer architectural practices are one of the main sources of data to understand the complex land use of these societies. In the hyperarid Atacama Desert coast (Northern Chile), hunter‐gatherers‐fishers developed standardized stone‐built architecture during the Late Archaic period (∼5,700–4,000 cal years BP), interpreted so far as sedentary villages or long‐term campsites. Nevertheless, the lack of site formation process studies and syst…
