  • A Comparison of Pollen Indicators of Slash-and-burn Agriculture in Forest Soils and Peatlands

Open Access•Ekaterina Ershova, Elena Ponomarenko et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2026

This study compares evidence of slash-and-burn agriculture in pollen spectra from soils and aquatic archives in the southern forest zone of Eastern Europe. Pollen assemblages from buried swidden soils (500-1800 cal BP) were analysed alongside coeval peat layers and modern surface soils. Swidden horizons show highly distinctive pollen spectra characterised by Betula dominance, low conifer representation, and the co-occurrence of cultivation indica…

  • Paleoenvironments of the Last Interglacial–Glacial Transition on the East European Plain

Open Access•Ekaterina Ershova, Svetlana Kuzmina et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2025

A multiproxy study of a new Pleistocene locality at Ivantzevo, Moscow Region, was conducted to reconstruct paleoenvironments from the Middle Pleistocene to the Last Pleniglacial. Lacustrine deposits and peat accumulated in a wetland within a fluvioglacial depression formed during the Dnieper–Moscow glaciation. Silts and clays were deposited during MIS 7 and the Moscow (Saale) Glaciation (MIS 6), while peat accumulation began in the Mikulino (Eemi…

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Archaeological Sites and Natural Features in the Smolensk Region in 2014-2021

III …

  • Subrecent Pollen Spectra of the Middle Volga Region and their Applicability for Climate and Land-Use History Reconstruction

Open Access•Ekaterina Ershova, Elena V Ponomarenko et al.•ARTICLE•Povolzhskaya Arkheologiya (The…•2022

The paper presents the results of spore-pollen analysis of 47 surface soil samples from the Middle Volga region, taken both in territories with vegetation close to zonal one and in heavily disturbed vegetation areas and agricultural lands. The analysis showed an ambiguous relationship between subrecent spectra and modern vegetation, both local and regional. This is explained by strong anthropogenic transformation of landscapes and the spread of c…

  • The Busharino Hillfort on the Setun River and Its Resource Area

  • Traces of Iron Age Slash-and-Burn Agriculture Under the Slavic Kurgans at the Msu Zvenigorod Biological Station

  • Fortified Settlements of Demidovka and Vyazovenki in the Smolensk Land

    Н А Кренке, Nikolay A Krenke et al.•ARTICLE•Rossiiskaia arkheologiia•2021

In 2017-2019, the authors of this article began new studies of the fortified settlements of Demidovka and Vyazovenki, located in the vicinity of Smolensk. Both sites (more precisely, their upper horizons) are attributed to the Tushemlin archaeological culture by the classic of Smolensk archeology prof. Schmidt. Taking into account the continuing controversial nature of the cultural attribution of the antiquities of the presentday Smolensk land, t…

    Open Access•L A Vyazov, Elena V Ponomarenko et al.•ARTICLE•ORIENTAL STUDIES•2021•References: 2

The article summarizes the results of a comprehensive landscape-archaeological study of the dynamics of human-environmental interaction in the Middle Sura region during the first millennium AD. The data resulted from the study of the River Sura floodplain at the former confluence of the Sura and the Malaya Sarka. The analysis of the sediments and buried soils indicates that the period between the first millennium BC and the first millennium AD sa…

  • Landscapes of Smolensk Oblast as a Consequence of Ancient Anthropogenic Activity

    Open Access•L G, Ekaterina Ershova et al.•ARTICLE•Povolzhskaya Arkheologiya (The…•2021•References: 2

The results of a paleoecological study of a peat deposit in Radomsky Mokh area (Smolensk Oblast, Krasninsky District) made it possible to reconstruct the history of the region's landscapes over the last 4 thousand years and identify its 4 contrasting periods. The reservoir was a lake at first, after which the pollen spectrum is dominated by pollen from native tree species. After a series of fires on the boundary of the Bronze and Early Iron Ages …

    Open Access•Bakumenko Varvara O, Ekaterina Ershova•ARTICLE•Povolzhskaya Arkheologiya (The…•2021•References: 2

In this work we present the results of spore and pollen analysis of forest soils from the Zvenigorod biological station of Moscow State University (Moscow Region, Russia). A comparative analysis of forest soils formed on the site of historical fields of the XVIII–XIX centuries and beyond showed that a specific complex of pollen and spores remains in the residual arable horizons, characteristic only of soils that have passed through the stages of …
