Some Ideas to Update “Comparing Media Systems” to the Digital Age
In recent years, we have enjoyed a flourishing of studies, books, and articles on comparative research on “legacy” journalism. Fewer have been the attempts to study in a comparative way how digitalization is changing journalism and how national digital spheres differ from each other. In this commentary, I argue that the limited number of comparative studies on digital journalism has several reasons. First of all, we face a new phenomenon that sch…

Mediated corruption scandals
This essay proposes a possible typology of mediated corruption scandals: market-driven corruption scandals, “custodians of conscience” corruption scandals, politically oriented corruption scandals. This typology is proposed in connection to the different social and political contextual conditions within which scandals develop. Particular attention is placed on the nature and the proceedings of the media system and the journalistic professionalism…
The traditional media, political parallelism and public opinion on contentious issues in the 2018 Italian election campaign
This article derives from a survey research and a content analysis of traditional media, in the 2018 Italian election campaign. In the first part, traditional Italian news media partisanhip is discussed as findings demonstrate that it still alive in-spite of novelties deriving from the development of new media. In the second part, authors investigate the level of negativity of news stories and how it is linked to different habits of consumption a…
Journalistic role performance. Concepts, contexts, and methods
This great book tackles a big challenge. Unlike existing volumes on role performance that are based mainly on empirical research, this book takes a more conceptual and theoretical route, even if documentary and verification materials are missing. Despite this absence, the book is essential reading to approach empirical work. The topic is clearly introduced in the title: journalistic role performance. The book is divided in three parts: the first …
Measuring and Explaining the Diversity of Voices and Viewpoints in the News
News media can be considered to fulfil their democratic role as a “marketplace of ideas” only if they present a diverse content that gives space to a wider range of ideas and viewpoints. But how can content diversity be assessed? And what determines actor and viewpoint diversity in the first place? By employing measurements of actor and viewpoint diversity at the article and newspaper level, this study provides a complete overview on the content …
Ten Years After Comparing Media Systems
In this article we review research published since the publication of Comparing Media Systems which seeks to operationalize concepts discussed in that work and to test the framework proposed there or to put forward alternatives or revisions. We focus on works that deal with the original 18 countries covered in Comparing Media Systems, and consider the progress made in developing quantitative measures across these cases for key variables, research…
Representations of Corruption in the British, French, and Italian Press
As part of a larger European Union (EU)-funded project, this paper investigates the coverage of corruption and related topics in three European democracies: France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Based on Freedom House data, these countries are characterized by different levels of press freedom. A large corpus of newspaper articles (107,248 articles) from the period 2004 to 2013 were analyzed using dedicated software. We demonstrate that freedom …

The Italian public sphere
This contribution is organized along two main interpretive lines. First: the Italian public sphere is very polarized because of well-established historical attitudes, a crowded media market and new technologies that push towards segmentation of the audience. The arrival of Berlusconi has only reinforced the already existing polarization that goes well beyond the borders of partisanship involving the content of news, the structure and professional…
Some Caveats about Comparative Research in Media Studies
Media Fragmentation, Party System, and Democracy
This paper discusses the possible consequences of mass media fragmentation over the structure and the functioning of democracy. Media fragmentation and audience segmentation are not new but they greatly increased in the very last years because of the long ongoing tendency towards commercialization and mostly because of the development of new media and the internet in particular. This has determined what is usually defined “the crisis of tradition…
Conclusion
In this concluding chapter we focus on a number of central issues that emerge from the contributions presented here. As with the volume as a whole, we take the conceptual framework of Comparing Media Systems as a point of departure, and to some extent we use this chapter to respond to issues the various contributors have raised about our concepts and argument. Beyond this, we try to summarize some of the central arguments put forward in this volu…
Leader, president, person
This article discusses the possible ambiguities that exist between three different words: personalization, presidentialization and leader. In recent times, and mostly in Europe, the first two words have been used very frequently by media scholars and political scientists to point out changes taking place both in the decision-making process and in the public arena. At the same time, the older word, leader, is still alive and very much used. Do the…

Comparing Media Systems
Building on a survey of media institutions in eighteen West European and North American democracies, Hallin and Mancini identify the principal dimensions of variation in media systems and the political variables which have shaped their evolution. They go on to identify three major models of media system development (the Polarized Pluralist, Democratic Corporatist and Liberal models) to explain why the media have played a different role in politic…

Politics, Media, and Modern Democracy
This important new text brings together an outstanding group of international scholars to look at the current state of electoral politics around the world. Elements of the modern (or American) model of election campaigning have been adopted in many countries in recent years—including the use of mass media, the personalization of campaigns, use of public opinion polls, and a general professionalization of campaigns—and conditions would seem to fav…
Rencontres au sommet
Recent forms of television diplomacy — the Reagan/Gorbatchev meetings of 1985, 1987, 1988, for example — can be interpreted using two perspectives. The paradigm, is built on a Durkheimian theory of societal integration, and on Victor Turner's theory of rituals. The public sphere paradigm, is largely derived from the work of Jurgen Habermas. Using both perspectives, but stressing the latter, the authors focus on a specific question : Do media even…
Between Trust and Suspicion
This article deals with the news gathering activity of Italian political journalists. Their interaction with information sources develops within a framework of constant ambivalence between trust and suspicion. Political journalists resolve this ambivalence through a problem-solving activity which implies a phase of negotiation with politicians and then a discussion with colleagues to verify their interpretation of the situation. From this derives…

Simulated Interaction
The concept of `para-social interaction' has chiefly been applied to entertainment materials. Following suggestions from Goffman, from the pragmatics of Palo Alto and from other approaches in discourse analysis, this article draws attention to the interactional strategies and devices often embedded in television news. It outlines a set of `meta-discoursive indicators', through which it should be possible to define and analyse the role the televis…

During the 1950s and 1960s, Catholic culture was a strong influence and this combined with normative goals in the research commissioned by RAI.
