  • Fish traps as evidence of changing social cooperation and investment on the Pacific Northwest Coast

Open Access•Deidre Cullon, Patrick Morgan Ritchie et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2025•References: 12

Large fish traps represent an investment and influence over a place, and a cooperative fishery. Individually and together, radiocarbon samples from wooden fish traps provide insights into our understanding of the past because they are proxies for collective action in subsistence activities. We have compiled 511 radiocarbon dates from more than 200 wooden fish traps across five regions of the Pacific Northwest Coast to examine how these collective…

A biface workspace dating to ca. cal a.d. 100–400 was identified during recent excavation at the Sts’ailes-Coast Salish village of YāçkEtEl, on the Harrison River on the Northwest Coast of North America. Based on a range of analyses, we suggest that a specialist crafted large bifaces produced as prestigious objects for exchange within a ceremonial interaction sphere and smaller, more functional bifaces for household and local purposes. The worksp…

  • Investigating the application of Raman spectroscopy of carbonaceous material in sedimentary lithic artifacts for archaeological provenancing applications in the Canadian Rockies

    Open Access•Timothy E Allan, Rhy Mcmillan et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The chemical compositions of toolstones composed of clastic and chemical sedimentary rock are often not distinct among procurement locations. However, sedimentary toolstone sources may show variations in the structural characteristics of the included carbonaceous material (CM) related to differences in their postdepositional histories, providing a potential proxy by which procurement locations, rather than individual rock units, can be assessed a…

  • Underwater spirits and sacred places

    Rhy Mcmillan, R Bruce Mcmillan•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•2019•References: 39

Indigenous people throughout Native America often bestowed special meaning and veneration upon certain landscape features. This is the case for a series of artesian springs in the upper Osage River basin in western Missouri. Artifacts and features recorded at four springs near the confluence of the Pomme de Terre and Osage Rivers indicate that particular activities were conducted around these artesian spring conduits, actions that suggest that th…

  • Plant Remains From a Woodland Storage Pit, Boney Spring, Missouri

    Frances B King, Rhy Mcmillan et al.•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1975•Cited by: 3•References: 2

An Early Woodland storage pit, dated at 1920±50 BP, was found in the peat layer surrounding the spring feeder at Boney Spring, Benton County, western Missouri, in association with a burial and other cultural material. The pit contents were unusually well preserved, apparently because of the saturated condition of the spring deposits. Materials from the pit were compared with plant remains from a control block removed from the surrounding contempo…

  • Fristoe Burial Mounds from the Prairie Border Region of Southwestern Missouri

    Rhy Mcmillan, R Bruce Mcmillan•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1968•References: 1

Three burial tumuli in southwestern Missouri near the Kansas line, indanger of destruction, were excavated by the University of Missouri. These sites, the Alberti, Amity, and Clemons Mounds, are all interpreted as components of the Fristoe Burial Complex, a Woodland mortuary complex of the we stern Ozarks. The identification of these sites as components of this manifestation has extended the geographical range of the Fristoe Burial Complex to the…
