  • Near-surface winds at the southern Laurentide ice margin through the last deglaciation

    Open Access•Jessica L Conroy, Christina Karamperidou et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2025

Terrestrial proxies of wind direction spanning the last deglaciation suggest easterly winds were present near the Laurentide Ice Sheet margin in the North American midcontinent. However, the existence and spatial extent of such easterly winds have not been investigated with transient paleoclimate model simulations, which could provide improved dynamical context for interpreting the causes of these winds. Here we assess near-surface winds near the…

  • Late Quaternary fluvio-aeolian interactions and possible aridification in west-central India

    Open Access•Sourav Mukhopadhyay, Pratik Pandey et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2025•References: 3

  • Updated chronology for Peoria Silt (loess) accumulation in Illinois and western Indiana from radiocarbon dating of terrestrial gastropod shells

    Open Access•David A Grimley, Henry M Loope et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2024

Based on calibrated radiocarbon ages of terrestrial gastropod shells (Succineidae, Discus , Stenotrema , Webbhelix ), the chronology of Peoria Silt (loess) deposition in the Central Lowlands is updated. These taxa provide reliable ages (within ~0.2 ka), based on historical shell dating, shell-organic age comparisons, and stratigraphic consistency. A compilation of 53 new and 36 published Peoria Silt shell ages (calibrated), from 12 localities, da…

  • Holocene relationships between climate, waterfowl, and lacustrine nutrient cycling at Kettle Lake, North Dakota, USA

    Open Access•Nicole K Murray, Jessica L Conroy et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•References: 5

Avian populations can substantially influence lacustrine nutrient loading and biogeochemical cycling through guano deposition. Here, we examine the influence of climate-forced avian migration throughout the Holocene on Kettle Lake, North Dakota, using stable nitrogen and carbon isotope values (δ 15 N, δ 13 C) of lake sediment organic matter. Carbon content and δ 13 C values are negatively correlated with δ 15 N and appear to be driven by changes …

  • Episodic deposition of Illinois Valley Peoria silt in association with Lake Michigan Lobe fluctuations during the last glacial maximum

Open Access•T Andrew Nash, Jessica L Conroy et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

The chronology and cause of millennial depositional oscillations within last glacial loess of the Central Lowlands of the United States are uncertain. Here, we present a new age model that indicates the Peoria Silt along the Illinois River Valley accumulated episodically from ~28,500 to 16,000 cal yr BP, as the Lake Michigan Lobe margin fluctuated within northeastern Illinois. The age model indicates accelerated loess deposition coincident with r…

  • Approaches and challenges to the study of loess—Introduction to the LoessFest Special Issue

    Open Access•Randall J Schaetzl, E Arthur Bettis et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

In September 2016, the annual meeting of the International Union for Quaternary Research’s Loess and Pedostratigraphy Focus Group, traditionally referred to as a LoessFest, met in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA. The 2016 LoessFest focused on “thin” loess deposits and loess transportation surfaces. This LoessFest included 75 registered participants from 10 countries. Almost half of the participants were from outside the United States, and 18 of the pa…

  • A 400‐year isotopic record of seabird response to eastern tropical Pacific productivity

Open Access•Jessica L Conroy, Aaron Collins et al.•ARTICLE•Geo Geography and Environment•2015

Seabirds play an important role in coastal environments, serving as key indicators of marine ecosystem variability as well as biovectors that influence terrestrial productivity and carbon storage. Long‐term estimates of seabird populations remain rare, but lakes that support large seabird populations in their watersheds can archive a history of seabird activity in their sediment records. Here we present a seabird guano‐influenced sediment record …

  • Holocene changes in eastern tropical Pacific climate inferred from a Galápagos lake sediment record

    Open Access•Jessica L Conroy, Jonathan T Overpeck et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2008
