    Аleksei S Shchavelev, Aleksei S Shchavelev•ARTICLE•RSUH/RGGU Bulletin Literary…•2025

For the first time in historiography, the article analyses the descriptions of the people Romaioi (Romans), designated as “Greeks”, in the original (“non-translated”) Old Rus’ literature of the 11th–12th centuries. The Greeks are depicted by Old Rus’ authors as bearers of high culture, endowed with exceptional spiritual (primarily true Orthodox faith and uniquely beautiful rituals) and material values. A typical Greek is characterised by possessi…

The main aim of this article is to try to give an outline of modern understanding of processes and mechanisms of formation of the people called Rus' and the polity of the Rurikid lineage. New interpretations of written sources are placed in the basis of the proposed approach. • Why do We Need a Typology (Classification) and a Political Anthropological Meta-Language for Describing Post-Neolithic Pre-Modern Polities

    Open Access•Аleksei S Shchavelev, Aleksei S Shchavelev•ARTICLE•Social Evolution & History•2025

In the twenty-first century, historical science witnessed a rapid obsolescence of most conceptual models of history and meta-languages for describing societies of the past, especially the history of archaic, post-Neolithic pre-Modern, societies, i. e. the period of Ancient Times and the Middle Ages. Now historians-theorists in their majority steal bits of empirical data from practitioners (Edward Evan Evans-Pritchard [1961] wrote about this), not…

Sergey Abashin, Andrey Adelfinskiy et al.•ARTICLE•Antropologicheskij forum•2025

This "Forum" considers attitudes towards theories and theoretical knowledge among ethnologists and anthropologists. Answering questions from the forum organisers, its participants discuss the need for a common "grand theory" that would unite the entire anthropological community, the tense relationship between theory and description, the causes, manifestations and effects of theory fatigue - and also the need for it, its shortage - and overproduct…

    Open Access•Аleksei S Shchavelev•ARTICLE•Vestnik Volgogradskogo…•2024

The paper proposes a clarification of the reading of the only birchbark letter No. 552 written in Greek. • Old Russian cities of the East European Plain in the 10th century according to written sources (updating the perspective for research)

    Open Access•Аleksei S Shchavelev•ARTICLE•Shagi / Steps•2023

The article provides an analytical review of references that contain oeconyms related to the people named Rus’ in the 10th century in Arabic, Byzantine, Old Russian and Old Scandinavian written traditions. Critical assessment of the identification of oeconyms from these texts in different languages and from different times requires us to reject the historiographical inertia of perceiving urban history of the 10th century through the prism of the …

  • New “Russian Translation” of the Treatise “De Adminstrando Imperio” Amid Its Contemporary Studies

    Open Access•Аleksei S Shchavelev•ARTICLE•Vestnik Volgogradskogo…•2021

Introduction. The article is a critical essay about an attempt to translate the Constantine’s treatise “De Administrando Imperio” into an artificially archaic “Pseudo-Slavic” language, made by R.A. Gimadeev. It is shown that his commentaries accompanying this translation are extremely primitive, the author does not follow scientific methods and he is not familiar with modern scientific literature. This is especially clearly seen, since this publi…

Introduction. The article aims to compare two texts concerning byzantine diplomatic practices of the mid 10th century. The first one is described in the 13th chapter of the treatise “De Administrando Imperio”, in which its author Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus gave some pieces of advice to his son Romanus II Porphyrogenitus how to line up rhetorical manipulation during the negotiations with ambassadors of different ‘barbarian’ nations. The secon…
