The Philanthropic Revolution
When we talk about voluntary giving today, we usually prefer the word philanthropy to charity. Why has this terminological shift taken place? What is its philosophical significance? How did philanthropy come to acquire so much prestige—and charity come to seem so old-fashioned? Was this change contested? Does it matter? In The Philanthropic Revolution, Jeremy Beer argues that the historical displacement of charity by philanthropy represents a radi…
Solar Influences on Climate
Understanding the influence of solar variability on the Earth's climate requires knowledge of solar variability, solar-terrestrial interactions, and the mechanisms determining the response of the Earth's climate system. We provide a summary of our current understanding in each of these three areas. Observations and mechanisms for the Sun's variability are described, including solar irradiance variations on both decadal and centennial time scales …
Total solar irradiance during the Holocene
For the first time a record of total solar irradiance covering 9300 years is presented, which covers almost the entire Holocene. This reconstruction is based on a recently observationally derived relationship between total solar irradiance and the open solar magnetic field. Here we show that the open solar magnetic field can be obtained from the cosmogenic radionuclide 10 Be measured in ice cores. Thus, 10 Be allows to reconstruct total solar irr…
Unusual activity of the Sun during recent decades compared to the previous 11,000 years
Persistent Solar Influence on North Atlantic Climate During the Holocene
Surface winds and surface ocean hydrography in the subpolar North Atlantic appear to have been influenced by variations in solar output through the entire Holocene. The evidence comes from a close correlation between inferred changes in production rates of the cosmogenic nuclides carbon-14 and beryllium-10 and centennial to millennial time scale changes in proxies of drift ice measured in deep-sea sediment cores. A solar forcing mechanism therefo…
Response of climate to solar forcing recorded in a 6000-yearδ18O time-series of Chinese peat cellulose
Previous studies have shown that the oxygen isotope ratio (δ 18 O) of plant cellulose can serve as a sensitive proxy indicator of past climate, but its application has mainly been restricted to tree-rings. Here we present a 6000-year high-resolutionδ 18 O record of peat plant cellulose from northeastern China. Theδ 18 O variation is interpreted as reflecting changes in regional surface air temperature. The climate events inferred from the isotope…
Genetic and environmental influences on MMPI factor scales
In general, the shared family environment appears to play a negligible role in determining individual differences in personality and interests. Nevertheless, scattered reports of significant shared environmental influence on such variables appear in the literature. Using data from the Texas Adoption Project (TAP), the current study attempted to replicate twin study findings of significant shared environmental variance on four of nine Minnesota Mu…
