  • Digital connectivity and firm participation in foreign markets

Open Access•Michele Imbruno, Joël Cariolle et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2025•References: 3

This paper studies how the bilateral digital connectivity resulting from the deployment of telecommunications SubMarine Cable (SMC) affects firm participation in export markets. Based on a heterogeneous firm model and using an unbalanced panel of bilateral trade data across 48 countries during the period 1997–2014, we find that an SMC connection between two countries is associated with an increase in the number of bilateral exporters in developed…

  • Is the Bangladesh Paradox Sustainable?

Open Access•Jean-Philippe Platteau, Rafiqua Ferdousi et al.•BOOK•Is the Bangladesh Paradox…•2024

Bangladesh is widely seen as a 'paradox'. Over the last quarter of a century, it has maintained economic growth and has outperformed many countries on social indicators while scoring very low on the quality of governance. Moreover, its economic progress does not seem to indicate significant improvement in comparative institutional indicators. Is the Bangladesh Paradox Sustainable? thus examines whether such a paradoxical combination can be sustai…

  • The landscape of CO 2 emissions across Africa

    Open Access•Jaime De Melo, Jean‐Marc Solleder•ARTICLE•World Economy•2023

This paper provides evidence on carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions for 51 African and 132 other countries in 163 sectors over the period 1995–2015. The resulting landscape is summarised in four patterns. Patterns identified for Africa differ from those identified for other regions but are closely related to a synthetic aggregate comparator based on key country characteristics. (1) All regions have reduced emission intensities over the period 1995–2…

    Open Access•Jaime De Melo, Marcelo Olarreaga•ARTICLE•World Economy•2023

The symposium focuses on the evolution and determinants of Africa's participation in Global Value Chains (GVC) through comparisons with other continents, but also across countries within Africa. Using firm, sector and country‐level data they provide a comprehensive micro and macroeconomic analysis of GVC in Africa that helps inform policymakers aiming at increasing Africa's participation in GVC. Three policy areas are identified. First, encouragi…

  • A (More) Systematic Exploration of the Trade Effect of Product-Specific Rules of Origin

Open Access•Julien Gourdon, Karin Gourdon et al.•ARTICLE•World Trade Review•2023

Rules of Origin (RoO) are critical components of Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs). They are designed to stop products coming into a PTA through the partner that applies the lowest tariff – a phenomenon known as trade deflection. While RoO are necessary, complex RoO may undo the benefits of trade agreements. Using a novel database of RoO, this paper evaluates the incidence and restrictiveness of different types of Product-Specific Rules of Ori…

  • Rules of Origin in North-South Preferential Trading Arrangements with an Application to Nafta

Open Access•José Ansón, Olivier Cadot et al.•ARTICLE•Review of International Economics•2005

All preferential trading agreements (PTAs) short of a customs union use rules of origin (ROO) to prevent trade deflection. ROO raise production costs and create administrative costs. This paper argues that in the case of the recent wave of North–South PTAs, the presence of ROO virtually limits the market access that these PTAs confer to the Southern partners. In the case of NAFTA, we find average compliance costs around 6% in ad valorem equivalen…

This 1999 volume takes a critical look at the current divide over immigration policies. It hopes to shed light on the debate by bringing together papers that investigate the link between trade and factor mobility, particularly labour migration, from theoretical and empirical perspectives. It examines the substitutability between trade and migration, the impact of regional integration on the location of economic activity, the role of public goods …

Traditionally, the empirical analysis of the effects of trade policy on resource allocation has relied both on a partial equilibrium framework using effective rates of protection and on a multisector general equilibrium framework. This paper responds to the growing dissatisfaction with the concept of perfect substitutability that has been assumed in these models. It discusses the theorectical properties and implications of one practical specifica…

At the end of the 1970s the development style based on accelerated industrial grow th and on modernization and expansion of the exports segment of agriculture was looking very vulnerable. This was borne out by the sharply expansionary economic policy adopted in 1979 which generated faster inflation against a background of an increased trade deficit and a very unfavourable external situation

This paper presents model simulations to quantify the effects of different stabilization packages in the distribution of income and wealth. The simulations suggest that a sharply contractionary stabilization package has a major adverse impact on the distribution of income. The shifts in distribution are likely to make the package less sustainable. The simulations support the view that stabilization packages which do not have specific components t…

Section 3 details the sources of estimates of premia on preexisting QRs (quota rents) in 1984 and the sources for the parameters describing demand and…
