Horse Teeth Shed Light on Seasonality in Scythian Mound Burials in Southern Russia
The Scythian archaeological culture is a component of the Scythian-Siberian community of equestrian nomadic pastoralists located in the northern Black Sea region and Ciscaucasia. This paper explores whether the Scythians were present in the central Pre-Caucasus all year round or only during a part of the year and were migrating seasonally. Since Scythian settlements are not known in this region, a possible clue may come from determining the seaso…
The case of a mass death of livestock in the Early Iron Age in the steppe zone of Kazakhstan
A mass burial of complete and almost complete cattle and small ruminant skeletons found in a pit within the Early Iron Age settlement of Abylai in Central Kazakhstan (49°15'N, 75°07'E) has been studied. The results of archaeological research and archeozoological contexts have shown that the animals' burial was a single event. The aim of the work was to determine the reasons for the formation of this accumu-lation. The analysis of skeletal element…
Informative Capacity of the Sargat Culture’s Disturbed Burials
The article deals with a complex study of the materials obtained during archaeological excavation of the kurgan Novopokrovka 16 in the middle Irtysh river basin (Omsk region). Attributes of the Bronze Age Steppe Animal Husbandry Based on the Materials of the Sintashta Culture Funerary Practices (Solntse II Cemetery)
The study of seasonal use of archaeological sites helps to understand lifestyles of prehistoric communities. One possible method of such research is the analysis of dental cementum of animals from the ancient settlements and burial complexes. The method offers some data about the seasonality of the animals’ slaughter that may help to explain pastoral strategies. This study presents the results of the analysis of dental cementum of sacrificed anim…
Small cave bear (U. ex gr. savini-rossicus) as a game species of prehistoric man
Imanay Cave is located in the Southern Urals (53°02' N, 56°26' E), at 420 m.a.s.l. A 9.5 m2 trench was exca-vated in the grotto in the inner part of the cave to examine the sediments. The accretion thickness was 1.2 m. The taphocoenosis of the Imanay Cave is of the Pleistocene age and contains about 10,000 specimens of bone re-mains of large mammals. They mostly belong to small cave bear (U. ex gr. savini-rossicus), and the remaining bones — to s…
Seasonal pattern of domestic cattle slaughtering in the Late Bronze Age Tanalyk settlement (Southern Ural)
The settlement of Tanalyk (Bashkortostan) is the most fully studied household object of the Late Bronze Age in the territory of Southern Ural. The pottery assemblage allows attributing it to the Srubnaya - Alakul type. The majority of bone remains in this site belong to domestic animals, and the number of wild species remains is ex-tremely small. There is no evidence of farming in the Late Bronze Age. Thus, the subsistence of the Tanalyk populati…
