Comment on “When did the Anthropocene begin? A mid-twentieth century boundary is stratigraphically optimal” by Jan Zalasiewicz et al. (2015), Quaternary International, 383, 196–203
Early Neolithic Trackways in the Thames Floodplain at Belmarsh, London Borough of Greenwich
Excavations in 2008 on the site of a proposed new prison at Belmarsh West, London Borough of Greenwich, found the heavily decayed remains of two superimposed Early Neolithic trackways. These structures, which are radiocarbon dated to the first quarter of the 4th millennium cal BC comprise some of the earliest structures yet encountered in the London Basin. The trackways were found towards the base of a peat sequence, immediately above the underly…
A stratigraphic framework for abrupt climatic changes during the Last Glacial period based on three synchronized Greenland ice-core records
Due to their outstanding resolution and well-constrained chronologies, Greenland ice-core records provide a master record of past climatic changes throughout the Last Interglacial–Glacial cycle in the North Atlantic region. As part of the INTIMATE (INTegration of Ice-core, MArine and TErrestrial records) project, protocols have been proposed to ensure consistent and robust correlation between different records of past climate. A key element of th…
Formal subdivision of the Holocene Series/Epoch
This discussion paper, by a Working Group of INTIMATE (Integration of ice‐core, marine and terrestrial records) and the Subcommision on Quaternary Stratigraphy (SQS) of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), considers the prospects for a formal subdivision of the Holocene Series/Epoch. Although previous attempts to subdivide the Holocene have proved inconclusive, recent developments in Quaternary stratigraphy, notably the definition …
Formal definition and dating of the GSSP (Global Stratotype Section and Point) for the base of the Holocene using the Greenland NGRIP ice core, and selected auxiliary records
The Greenland ice core from NorthGRIP (NGRIP) contains a proxy climate record across the Pleistocene–Holocene boundary of unprecedented clarity and resolution. Analysis of an array of physical and chemical parameters within the ice enables the base of the Holocene, as reflected in the first signs of climatic warming at the end of the Younger Dryas/Greenland Stadial 1 cold phase, to be located with a high degree of precision. This climatic event i…
Synchronisation of palaeoenvironmental events in the North Atlantic region during the Last Termination
Conceptual and methodological issues in the investigation of occupational stress. A case study of police officers deployed on body recovery at the site of the Lockerbie air crash
This paper presents data from a case study of the 25 police officers comprising the Victim Recovery and Identification Team (VRIT) of the Metropolitan Police Service who were deployed at the site of the Lockerbie air crash in 1988. The purpose in presenting this case study is to review some of the conceptual and methodological issues identified in recent literature on stress amongst police officers. It looks at the distinction between stress and …
Persistent Places in the Mesolithic Landscape
Evidence for the early Postglacial use of upland environments in the Mesolithic in various parts Britain has been known for a long time. However, until relatively recently such evidence had been remarkably absent from upland south Wales, which includes some of the highest mountain ranges in southern Britain. In this paper we report on new work at the upland location of Waun Fignen Felen which consists of discrete Early and later Mesolithic artefa…
An early-Holocene pollen, mollusc and ostracod sequence from lake marl at Llangorse Lake, South Wales, UK
An integrated analysis of molluscs, ostracods and pollen is presented from early Holocene lake marl at Llangorse Lake, Powys, South Wales. The mollusc and ostracod records reflect a littoral environment with increasing eutrophic conditions and a progressive shallowing of lake waters, although the record does not begin until around 9600 BP, probably due to the isolated location. The pollen profile provides evidence of both local and regional veget…
The Excavation of Two Cairns and Associated Features at Carneddau, Carno, Powys, 1989–90
The complete excavation of one and the partial excavation of a second bronze age structured cairn are described. The excavations provided important evidence for the construction sequence of the cairns and Welsh bronze age funerary practices. A series of radiocarbon dates was obtained for the collared urns associated with the cairns
Excavations and Survey at Bryn Cysegrfan, Llanfair Clydogau, Dyfed, 1979
THE EARTHWORKS of a group of pillow mounds in association with four buildings were surveyed and partially excavated during 1978 and 1979 in advance of destruction. Below the earthen mounds, on the former ground surface, were alignments of flat stones found to cover a network of artificial burrows for rabbits. A single radiocarbon date from burnt vegetation beneath one mound provided a date of a.d. 1375±60. The buildings were also excavated and fo…
