A Microbiological Study of the Content of Vessels from a 6th Century BC Burial at Nor Armavir, Armenia
A Microbiological Study of the Content of Vessels from a 6th Century BC Burial at Nor Armavir, Armenia
We present the results of a microbiological analysis of the soil-filling of vessels (two goblets, four pots, two jugs, and a jug-goblet) from a 6th century BC burial at Nor Armavir, Armavir Region, Republic of Armenia. Trophic preferences, the number of microbial communities in the soil samples, and the growth patterns of isolated microorganisms, grown in liquid culture media and capable of fermenting milk and simple sugars, strongly suggest that…
New data to determine the Nature of food in the vessels from the classical burial Ground of Volna 1
Soil samples were taken from the bottom layer of several vessels (an amphora, a red clay jug, and two oinochoai) from the classical burial ground of Volna 1 on the Taman Peninsula in order to develop approaches to determining the composition of ritual food. Microbiological and enzymological traces indicating initial organic substrates in the vessels were studied. By planting an aqueous suspension of soil on solid nutrient media, the number of tro…
Genesis and functions of the Late Bronze Age ash heaps in the Southern Trans-Urals in the context of new interdisciplinary research
In this article, we discuss the results of the study of ash heaps typical for the steppe belt of the Urals, Ka-zakhstan and Siberia. These are specific objects adjacent to settlements of the Middle and Late Bronze Age, their cultural layer contains archaeological finds and consists of loose soil similar in appearance to ash. However, de-bates about their nature and purpose use mainly archaeological arguments and very rarely involve interdiscipli-…
Paleosurface studies of the remains of a building in the Mikhailovsky Cordon settlement
Pedoarchaeological study of the remains of a building on the territory of the Old Slavic site (the settlement of Mik-hailovsky Cordon - the Slavic Borshevo Culture of the late 1st mil. AD) in the Voronezh region were carried out in order to obtain new data on the layout of the settlement, the type of housing building, life sustainability, economy, and residen-tial use. The main purpose of soil research was the identification of the nature of the …
Soil Microbiological Approaches to Reconstruction of the Purpose of Ancient Settlements Construction
The aim of the article is reconstruction of purpose of ancient settlements construction using a combination of chemical and microbiological indicators. The study object is the Bagai-1 settlement of the Late Bronze Age in the northwestern part of the Crimean Peninsula. The chemical and microbiological properties of the occupation layer within the buildings of various shapes and sizes in different parts of the site have been studied. It was establi…
Reconstruction of Original Content of the Kurgan Funeral Vessels Based on Microbial and Enzymatic Parameters
The original content of ritual vessels from the burials of the two kurgan cemeteries was reconstructed using the multisubstrate testing system of microbial respiration and enzymatic activity of the soil from the pots. For this purpose, a laboratory model experiment was conducted and the decomposition of protein, lipid and polysaccharide organic materials was studied. Basing on the results of the model experiment, most indicative enzymes produced …
Interdisciplinary research of ash heap sediment near Stepnoye settlement (Chelyabinsk Oblast)
An ash heap is defined as a specific object at an archaeological site, usually in the form of a separate hillock containing a layer of finely-dispersed greyish-yellow or ash-coloured soil. The existing assumptions about the formation and functional pur-pose of ash heaps, as special archaeological objects found near the Bronze Age pastoral settlements, have so far been poorly supported by scientific data. At the ash heap near the Sintashta fortifi…
Soil biochemical inticators of initial presence of fat in different archaeological contexts
The article proposes a new biochemical approach for the reconstruction of the initial presence of fat-containing products in different archaeological contexts (ceramic vessels from burials, soil samples in different parts of the skeleton and cultural layers of archaeological sites) based on the study of qualitative and quantitative changes in the parameters of the soil microbial community, namely, specific groups of microorganisms (lipolytics), a…
Paleoecological Conditions in the Steppe Zone of the Eastern European Plain at the Post-Catacomb Time
The article is devoted to reconstruction of paleoecological conditions of the steppe zone of the Eastern European Plain in the late Middle Bronze Age. The buried soils of the Kurgan of the Babinskaya culture in the Bogucharsky district of the Voronezh region were studied. It is shown that chemical properties of soil are determined by winter precipitation, while the state of its microbial community reflects the moisture content in the warm season.…

Cellulosolitic Microorganisms Activity as an Indicator of Details Funeral Ceremony
The article describes the results and the methodology for determining the initial presence of wares containing cellulose in the Vyatichi funeral ceremony in the Middle Ages in the natural zone of the southern taiga, Moscow region. Cellulose is a high molecular weight polymer. Cellulose (in other words – fiber) contains up to half of all the organic carbon of the biosphere, therefore, the prevalence of various microorganisms utilizing cellulose is…
Variability of the cultural layer properties of the Bronze Age settlement Ksizovo-1 in the forest-steppe Don region
The Identification of Wool by the Number of Keratinolytic Microorganisms in the Ground of Ancient and Medieval Burials
The paper describes the method for determining the initial presence of wool products in the burial rite of several cultures of the Bronze Age and the Middle Ages. The method is based on the analysis of the number of keratinolytic fungi in soils. Keratin is a proteinaceous biopolymer, which is a part of wool, leather, feather, and other materials. Its decomposition in soil occurs with the participation of a small group of soil fungi with keratinol…
