Between sacrum and profanum
In one of the shallow bays of Lopar, in the northern part of the Island of Rab, dominates a rocky islet known as Lukovac. Despite its small size, the islet reveals unique late antique architectural remains. Based on the fieldwork conducted, it can be concluded that almost the entire area of the islet was covered by masonry buildings. The islet was additionally surrounded by a wall reinforced with buttresses. The church was the centrepiece of this…
Environmental Change Documented in the Fluvial Landscape
Zastosowanie metody georadarowej w badaniach dawnej architektury
Pomimo tych ograniczeń, prawidłowo zaplanowane i…
High-resolution insight into the Holocene environmental history of the Burullus Lagoon in northern Nile delta, Egypt
The modern Nile delta developed in the Middle and Late Holocene, and at its most northern-central point is situated at the Burullus Lagoon, which is environmentally diverse, including salt marshes, mudflats, and sand plains, and separated from a sea by a sand barrier overtopped with high sand dunes. The lagoon has been fed since the Middle Holocene by the Sebennitic branch of the Nile and marine intrusions through the Bughaz inlet. A sediment cor…
Loron / Santa Marina (Tar-Vabriga, Poreč, Croatie)La villa de Santa Marina. L’huilerie (campagne 2019)
Results of Geophysical Survey in Bargat El-Shab in Southern Egypt. Insight into the Early Holocene Settlement Pattern of the El Nabta / Al Jerar Interphase
Global climatic changes which occurred at the beginning of the Holocene had a huge impact on cultural development in northeast Africa. The shift of the tropical rain zone to the north led to the transformation of the desert into a savannah. The appearance of vegetation and animals also attracted people to considerable areas of the southern part of the Western Desert in Egypt. Settlement was concentrated around natural depressions or deflation tro…
The 4.2 ka BP Event in the Mediterranean region
The Mediterranean region and the Levant have returned some of the clearest evidence of a climatically dry period occurring around 4200 years ago. However, some regional evidence is controversial and contradictory, and issues remain regarding timing, progression, and regional articulation of this event. In this paper, we review the evidence from selected proxies (sea-surface temperature, precipitation, and temperature reconstructed from pollen, δ1…
Multidisciplinary insight into late Roman rural settlement on the northeastern Adriatic coast of Croatia
Results of multidisciplinary research conducted on the island of Rab (Northeastern Adriatic, Croatia) are presented with particular focus on late Roman rural settlements and their economic activities. The settlement in Podšilo bay, Lopar peninsula, is analyzed in more detail, providing evidence on a vibrant local community engaged in diversified craft activities and the exploitation of local land and marine resources. Along with the specificities…
The first Neolithic roundel discovered in Poland reinterpreted with the application of the geophysical Amplitude Data Comparison (ADC) method
This article presents the results of a three‐dimensional (3D) stratigraphic analysis of a Neolithic roundel in Bodzów (south‐western Poland) with the application of the Amplitude Data Comparison (ADC) method. The ADC method is based on the comparison of magnetic amplitude records (in nanoteslas) with corresponding ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) reflection profiles. Thus, it is possible to analyse the 3D aspects of buried features based on GPR ima…
Migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone in North Africa during the Holocene
Western Section of the ‘Dry Moat’ Channel Surrounding Step Pyramid Complex in Saqqara in the Light of Ground‐penetrating Radar Prospection
The Dry Moat is one of the most impressive and at the same time puzzling architectonic structure preserved within the famous royal necropolis at Saqqara, Egypt. It is a rock‐hewn ditch about 40 m wide and of variable depth, which surrounds the Step Pyramid complex built by Pharaoh Djoser from the Third Dynasty which was the first monumental structure totally built of stone blocks in human history. The function and intention of the Dry Moat remain…
