  • Project PrIDE in Context

    Open Access•Linda J Koenig, Stephen A Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Evaluation and Program Planning•2022

Over the past decade, CDC has been implementing a high-impact prevention (HIP) approach to HIV, directing funds towards activities with the greatest likelihood of reducing new infections and disparities. Corresponding to this shift, the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention (DHAP) began funding a series of multi-site demonstration projects to provide extra support and evaluative capacity to select health departments to initiate new HIP programming, wit…

  • Effects of individual differences, society, and culture on youth‐rated problems and strengths in 38 societies

Open Access•Masha Y Ivanova, Thomas M Achenbach et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2022

BACKGROUND: Clinicians increasingly serve youths from societal/cultural backgrounds different from their own. This raises questions about how to interpret what such youths report. Rescorla et al. (2019, European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, 28, 1107) found that much more variance in 72,493 parents' ratings of their offspring's mental health problems was accounted for by individual differences than by societal or cultural differences. Although p…

  • Relationship between a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expanded HIV testing initiative and past-year testing by race/ethnicity

Tommi Gaines, Tommi L Gaines et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2016

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) expanded testing initiative (ETI) aims to bolster HIV testing among populations disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic by providing additional funding to health departments serving these communities. ETI prioritizes testing in clinical settings; therefore, we examined the relationship between state-level ETI participation and past-year HIV testing among a racially/ethnically diverse …

  • HIV Testing by Transgender Status at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention–Funded Sites in the United States, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands, 2009–2011

Nancy Habarta, Guoshen Wang et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 41

Objectives. We examined HIV testing services, seropositivity, and the characteristics associated with newly identified, confirmed HIV-positive tests among transgender individuals. Methods. We analyzed data (2009–2011) using bivariate and multivariable logistic regression to examine the relationships between HIV positivity and sociodemographic and risk characteristics among male-to-female transgender individuals. Results. Most of the testing was c…

  • Behavioral and Emotional Problems Reported by Parents of Children Ages 6 to 16 in 31 Societies

Open Access•Leslie Rescorla, Thomas M Achenbach et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Emotional and…•2007

This study compared parents' ratings of behavioral and emotional problems on the Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach, 1991;Achenbach & Rescorla, 2001) for general population samples of children ages 6 to 16 from 31 societies ( N = 55,508). Effect sizes for society ranged from .03 to .14. Effect sizes for gender were ≤ .01, with girls generally scoring higher on Internalizing problems and boys generally scoring higher on Externalizing problems. Ef…

  • Occupational Self-Direction, Intellectual Functioning, and Self-Directed Orientation in Older Workers

Carmi Schooler, Mesfin S Mulatu et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•2004•Cited by: 11•References: 38

Using data from 1994–95 third‐wave interviews, this study tests whether Kohn and Schooler’s findings (based on 1964 and 1974 interviews) that self‐directed occupational conditions increase intellectual functioning and self‐directed orientations hold when the respondents are 20 years older. Results confirm that even late in life self‐directedness of work continues to affect intellectual functioning and self‐directedness of orientation. These psych…

  • Psychometric Properties of Scores on the Preliminary Amharic Version of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory in Ethiopia

    Open Access•Mesfin S Mulatu•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2002

Psychometric properties of scores on the Amharic version of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-A) were explored with 551 students in Ethiopia. Results show strong correlations ( r[62] ≥ .89) between the corresponding scores on State Anxiety (SA) and Trait Anxiety (TA) scales of the STAI-A and the original STAI. High levels of internal consistency reliabilities (αs ≥ .85) and moderately high median item-remainder correlations ( rs ≥ .47) were…

  • Causal Connections between Socio-Economic Status and Health

Mesfin S Mulatu, Carmi Schooler•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2002•Cited by: 34

Using structural equation modeling techniques on data from a nationally representative longitudinal survey, we first explored the reciprocal relationships between socio-economic status (SES) and health status. We then estimated the degree to which health-related lifestyles/behaviors and psychosocial distress are mediating mechanisms of these relationships. As predicted, SES positively affects health, and health positively affects SES. Although th…
