A randomized controlled trial of cognitive behaviour therapy to improve glycaemic control and psychosocial wellbeing in adolescents with type 1 diabetes
We evaluated a cognitive behaviour therapy-based programme to improve glycaemic control and psychosocial wellbeing in adolescents with type 1 diabetes. A total of 147 adolescents aged 13-16 years were randomized to the intervention ( n = 73) or standard care ( n = 74). The primary outcome was glycaemic control at 3 and 12 months post randomization, and secondary measures were stress, self-efficacy and quality of life. Mixed-effects regression mod…
Improving Parenting of Toddlers’ Emotions Using an Emotion Coaching Parenting Program
Parental responses to children's emotions influence children's emotion‐related abilities. Tuning in to Toddlers (TOTS) is a new emotion‐focused parenting program for parents of toddlers aged 18 to 36 months. It is based on the empirically tested Tuning in to Kids program that teaches parents how to emotion coach their children. In the current pilot study, an intervention‐only sample of parents of typically developing toddlers attended a 6‐session…

Predictors of Diabetes Self‐care, Metabolic Control, and Mental Health in Youth with Type 1 Diabetes
The purpose of this study was to explore the psychosocial predictors of diabetes self‐care (adherence to care regimes), metabolic control (glycated haemoglobin), and mental health among rural‐ and urban‐dwelling youth with type 1 diabetes. One hundred and twenty three adolescents/young adults (aged 13−25 years, mean = 16 years, standard deviation = 3.8 years) with type 1 diabetes, 50 males and 73 females, completed questionnaires reporting on dia…
Maternal Report of Infant Emotional Well‐Being Following Their Infant's Hospitalization for Neonatal Cardiac Surgery
Little is known about the immediate impact of neonatal cardiac surgery on emotional and behavioral functioning in infancy. This exploratory, qualitative study investigated if infants who underwent cardiac surgery in the first 3 months of life exhibited emotional and behavioral dysregulation or traumatic stress responses. Ninety‐one infants and their mothers were recruited while inpatients. Mothers were interviewed about their perceptionof the imp…
Adapting a Generic Coping Skills Programme for Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes
Few qualitative studies have examined the views of adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) regarding psychosocial programme development and content. We conducted focus groups with 13 adolescents with T1DM to explore stressors and gain feedback on adapting a generic coping skills programme. The following prevalent stressors were identified: parental/adolescent conflict, balancing self-management and daily life, and health concerns. Preval…
