Affective and cognitive predictors of lapse in exercise and dietary behavior
OBJECTIVE: When losing weight, many individuals make healthy changes in their exercise and dietary behavior. However, maintaining these changes is often found to be challenging. To prevent individuals from lapsing, insight into predictors of lapse in exercise and dietary behavior is needed. METHODS AND MEASURES: = 81) participated in two seven-day EMA weeks. Participants received six semi-random prompts a day, at which they indicated whether a la…
Syndemic processes between non-communicable diseases and HIV within the Kingdom of Eswatini
BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa faces a double burden of disease due to the continued high prevalence of infectious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis, and a concurrent increase in non-communicable diseases. The co-occurrence and clustering of multiple diseases can cause a syndemic, synergistically interacting epidemics, driven by context. METHODS: This cross-sectional study investigated potential syndemics in Eswatini, by determining geospatia…
Mental health trajectories and peer refugee helper engagement, among Afghan, Iranian and Syrian refugees and asylum seekers in Greece
Peer Refugee Helpers (PRHs) support peers in humanitarian settings, which may influence their own mental health. This longitudinal study examined anxiety and depression trajectories among Afghan, Iranian and Syrian refugees and asylum seekers in Greece, focusing on how PRH status (paid/unpaid) and sense of coherence influence trajectory membership. The study included 176 adult, PRHs and non-helpers. The following scales were administered three ti…
Developing a Smoking Cessation Intervention for People With Severe Mental Illness Treated by Flexible Assertive Community Treatment Teams in the Netherlands
This study provides insight into expert consensus on the core components of a smoking cessation intervention for people with SMI. The results of this study were used for the development of a comprehensive smoking cessation program
Can Healthy Checkout Counters Improve Food Purchases? Two Real-Life Experiments in Dutch Supermarkets
Most snacks displayed at supermarket checkouts do not contribute to a healthy diet. We investigated the effects of introducing healthier snack alternatives at checkouts in supermarkets on purchasing behavior. In Study 1, we investigated the effect of completely substituting less healthy with healthier snacks (one supermarket). In Study 2, we investigated the effect of placing and discounting healthier snacks while the less healthy snacks remain i…
Trajectories of health-related quality of life among people with a physical disability and/or chronic disease during and after rehabilitation
Most of the people who participated in a physical activity promotion programme obtained a relatively stable but moderate HR-QoL. The identified HR-QoL trajectories among our heterogeneous cohort are disease-overarching. Our findings suggest that people in rehabilitation may benefit from person-centred advice on management of fatigue and pain (e.g. activity pacing) and the acceptance of the disability
Reaching rural communities through ‘Healthy Entrepreneurs’
The purpose of the current study was to explore the association between community health entrepreneurship and the sexual and reproductive health status of rural households in West-Uganda. We collected data using digital surveys in a cluster-randomized cross-sectional cohort study. The sample entailed 1211 household members from 25 randomly selected villages within two subcounties, of a rural West-Ugandan district. The association between five val…
Identifying developmental trajectories of body mass index in childhood using latent class growth (mixture) modelling
Our results indicate the importance of healthy lifestyle behaviors at a young age, and indicate that maternal BMI is a very important risk factor for the development of childhood overweight. Comprehension of heterogeneity in the development of BMI and associations with modifiable health related behaviors is interesting for prevention by targeting high risk behaviors in early childhood, especially in low SES children, children of non-western ethni…
