Self-reported Intimate Partner Violence Before and After Return of Recency Test Results
We conducted a prospective cohort study to assess IPV experiences after returning recency test results to PLHIV in Rwanda. At 60 health facilities, newly diagnosed PLHIV underwent HIV recency testing and baseline viral load measurement. Recency test results were returned after viral load testing. During interviews conducted at four study visits over 6 months, participants self-reported IPV victimization and perpetration experiences with current p…
Prevalence and factors associated with obesity in Rwanda
Obesity is an emerging public health concern in Rwanda, yet nationally representative data on its associated factors remain limited. This study analyzes recent survey data to assess the prevalence of obesity and explore associated demographic, behavioral, and metabolic characteristics. The study analyzed data from the 2022 Rwanda NCD STEPS Survey, a nationally representative cross-sectional study of 5,509 adults aged 18–69 years. Data collection …

Validation of the Child Depression Screening Tool in three African settings
The unavailability of reliable, easy-to-use depression screening tools adapted for Sub-Saharan African children is a significant barrier to the treatment of childhood depression. We thus adapted the Child Depression Screening Tool (CDST) to the South African (SA), Senegalese (S) and Rwandan (R) contexts, as a tool to screen for depression in children suffering from chronic illnesses, trauma and difficulties related to COVID-19, family and communi…
Factors associated with retention and adherence on Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis among men who have sex with men in Kigali, Rwanda
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is recommended as an HIV prevention measure for men who have sex with men (MSM). We assessed factors associated with PrEP retention and adherence among MSM in Kigali, Rwanda. We undertook a retrospective cross-sectional study and used a questionnaire to obtain PrEP retention and adherence history from MSM enrolled in the key population (KP) program that attended scheduled follow-up clinics from four (4) health faci…
HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B virus infection and male circumcision in five Sub-Saharan African countries
Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) has primarily been promoted for HIV prevention. Evidence also supports that male circumcision offers protection against other sexually transmitted infections. This analysis assessed the effect of circumcision on syphilis, hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and HIV. Data from the 2015 to 2019 Population-based HIV Impact Assessments (PHIAs) surveys from Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe were us…
Spatio-temporal dynamic of the Covid-19 epidemic and the impact of imported cases in Rwanda
The study recommends using evidence-based decisions in the management of epidemics and integrating statistical models in the analytics component of the health information system
Association Between Clinical Encounter Frequency and HIV-Related Stigma Among Newly-Diagnosed People Living with HIV in Rwanda
HIV-related stigma in healthcare settings remains a key barrier to engaging people living with HIV (PLHIV) in care. This study investigated the association between clinical encounter frequency and HIV-related anticipated, enacted, and internalized stigma among newly-diagnosed PLHIV in Rwanda. From October 2020 to May 2022, we collected data from adult PLHIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Kigali, Rwanda who were participating in a randomized, …
The secondary transmission pattern of Covid-19 based on contact tracing in Rwanda
INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 has shown an exceptionally high spread rate across and within countries worldwide. Understanding the dynamics of such an infectious disease transmission is critical for devising strategies to control its spread. In particular, Rwanda was one of the African countries that started COVID-19 preparedness early in January 2020, and a total lockdown was imposed when the country had only 18 COVID-19 confirmed cases known. Using in…
Child mortality associated with maternal HIV status
INTRODUCTION: Child mortality remains highest in regions of the world most affected by HIV/AIDS. The aim of this study was to assess child mortality rates in relation to maternal HIV status from 2005 to 2015, the period of rapid HIV treatment scale-up in Rwanda. METHODS: We used data from the 2005, 2010 and 2015 Rwanda Demographic Health Surveys to derive under-2 mortality rates by survey year and mother's HIV status and to build a multivariable …
The role of community health workers and local leaders in reducing attrition among participant in the Aids indicator survey and HIV incidence in a national cohort study in Rwanda
The Rwanda AIDS indicator and HIV incidence survey recorded a very high retention of participants after 12 months. CHWs and local leaders played a major role to reduce attrition rate and identifying factors associated with loss-to-follow-up can help CHWs strengthen the quality of longitudinal survey data
