  • Mediators of educational differences in dementia risk later in life

Open Access•Teferi Mekonnen, Vegard Skirbekk et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Despite a well-known inverse association between education and dementia risk, the mediating mechanisms are not well understood. We explored how lifestyle and health risk factors across the life-course mediate the relationship between education and dementia among adults aged 70 + years. We included 7,655 participants with dementia diagnoses and education information, using a historical cohort design linking prospective exposure data across the lif…

  • Deep phenotyping of pubertal development in Norwegian children

Open Access•Pétur Benedikt Júlíusson, Ingvild Særvold Bruserud et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2023

Ultrasound-based assessments of puberty provided novel references for breast developmental stages and enabled the measurement of testicular volume on a continuous scale. Endocrine z -scores allowed for an intuitive interpretation of changing hormonal levels during puberty on a quantitative scale, which, in turn, provides opportunities for further analysis of pubertal development using machine-learning approaches

  • Polygenic prediction of educational attainment within and between families from genome-wide association analyses in 3 million individuals

Open Access•Aysu Okbay, Yeda Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Genetics•2022

We conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of educational attainment (EA) in a sample of ~3 million individuals and identify 3,952 approximately uncorrelated genome-wide-significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A genome-wide polygenic predictor, or polygenic index (PGI), explains 12–16% of EA variance and contributes to risk prediction for ten diseases. Direct effects (i.e., controlling for parental PGIs) explain roughly half th…

  • Marital Histories and Associations With Later-Life Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment Risk in the Hunt4 70+ Study in Norway

Open Access•Vegard Skirbekk, CATHERINE E BOWEN et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Objectives: Earlier studies suggest that being married in later life protects against dementia, and that being single in old age increases the risk of dementia. In this study, we examine midlife marital status trajectories and their association with dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) at ages 70 plus using a large population based sample from Norway. Methods: Based on a general population sample linked to population registries ( N = 8706…

  • Matrilineal diversity and population history of Norwegians

Open Access•Dana Kristjansson, Jon Bohlin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2021•References: 45

BACKGROUND: While well known for its Viking past, Norway's population history and the influences that have shaped its genetic diversity are less well understood. This is particularly true with respect to its demography, migration patterns, and dialectal regions, despite there being curated historical records for the past several centuries. In this study, we undertook an analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) diversity within the country to elabora…

  • Genome-wide association study identifies 74 loci associated with educational attainment

Open Access•Aysu Okbay, Jonathan P Beauchamp et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2016

  • GWAS of 126,559 Individuals Identifies Genetic Variants Associated with Educational Attainment

    Open Access•Cornelius A Rietveld, Sarah E Medland et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2013

Genetic College Many genomic elements in humans are associated with behavior, including educational attainment. In a genome-wide association study including more than 100,000 samples, Rietveld et al. (p. 1467 , published online 30 May; see the Perspective by Flint and Munafò ) looked for genes related to educational attainment in Caucasians. Small genetic effects at three loci appeared to impact educational attainment.
