Divorced Women
We examined individual differences in stress and coping for a sample of 56 divorced white women aged 29 through 46. Using telephone interview, diary, and home visit, data were collected on major and minor stressors, potential mediators, and adjustment outcomes. We found that with high levels of stress, dispositional and social support resources were strongly associated with good adjustment outcome. In the face of relatively low levels of stress, …

Individual differences in exposure and response to stress in a sample of 56 divorced mothers were examined. Compared with normative data, the sample reported significantly more negative life events, more psychiatric symptoms, and poorer social adjustment. Social support and income emerged as the mediating factors most strongly associated with adjustment outcome
