Web Databases, Data Analysis and Modelling in Archaeological Research
One of the greatest scientific and social challenges of the 21st century in all disciplines is the storage, structuring, modelling, interpretation, and publication of large, complex research data sets (big data). Archaeological research is no exception. Over the past two decades, this discipline has developed through much more intensive cooperation with life and natural sciences than before, and is now faced with the exponential growth and expans…
Neolithic, Copper, and Bronze Age woodland composition and exploitation in the Great Hungarian Plain, East‐Central Europe
In the prehistoric communities of the Great Hungarian Plain (GHP), the exploitation of forest steppe and floodplain woodlands started at ∼6000 cal BC. So far, only scattered and irregular wood charcoal analyses have been performed on Holocene archaeological sites, therefore the species composition of the GHP woodlands is known mainly from pollen records. This study aims to fill this gap by systematic sampling and analysis of key Early, Middle and…
Provenance, technology and possible function of Gáta–Wieselburg vessels from the Trieste Karst (northeastern Italy)
A few scattered vessels, typologically attributed to the Gáta–Wieselburg culture, are known from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy. This culture spread during the Early Bronze Age (Reinecke Br A1b and A2, 2100–1700/1600 bc ) in present‐day eastern Austria, western Hungary and southwestern Slovakia. Rare ceramic artefacts, typically biconical double‐handled jugs with well‐burnished surfaces, have been discovered in caves of th…
Bronzkori nő szobrászi arcrekonstrukciója Balatonkeresztúr-Réti-dűlő lelőhelyről
Balatonkeresztúr-Réti-dűlő lelőhelyen az M7-es autópálya építését megelőző ásatások során 2003–2004-ben kilenc régészeti korszak emlékei között a kora bronzkor végére keltezhető kisapostagi kultúra települése és 12, zömmel melléklet nélküli temetkezése is előkerült. A 13. sírban 35-45 éves nő nyugodott, akinek a feje körül előkerült, fejdíszhez vagy sapka díszhez köthető apró fém ékszerek arra utalnak, hogy a településen élő közösségen belül maga…
The origins and spread of domestic horses from the Western Eurasian steppes
Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare 1 . However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling 2–4 at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 bc 3 . Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia 5 and Anatolia 6 , have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic,…
Methods and Opportunities in the Research of Bronze Age Communities
Although there is no textual evidence known from the Bronze Age, written sources describing migrations of later (i.e. Early Medieval) periods effecting the Carpathian Basin were interpreted as instances of cultural and population change which could be comparable with processes that took place during the Bronze Age in the Carpathian Basin. In the past two decades, Eurasian archaeological research received a new impetus to investigate the traces of…
Módszerek és lehetőségek a bronzkori közösségek kutatásában
Bár írásos emlékeket nem ismerünk a bronzkor időszakából, a Kárpát-medencét érintő későbbi (pl. kora középkori) népvándorlásokra vonatkozó források ismeretében gyakran a bronzkor változásait is új népek betelepüléséhez, kisebb-nagyobb migrációkhoz kötötte a régészeti kutatás. Az utóbbi két évtizedben újra előtérbe került a történelem előtti időkben feltételezhető eurázsiai vándorlások nyomainak azonosítása, a kutatásba immár más tudományágak, töb…
Transformations of Metal Supply during the Bronze Age in the Carpathian Basin
This paper presents recent research questions which have been raised and methods which have been used in the study of Bronze Age metallurgy in connection with available natural resources (ores) in and around the Carpathian Basin. This topic fits in the most current trends in the research on European prehistoric archaeology. Given the lack of written sources, copper and bronze artifacts discovered in settlement and cemetery excavations and prehist…
Case Studies on the Radiocarbon Dating of Bronze Age Cremation Burials in Hungary
János Dani, Kitti Köhler, Gabriella Kulcsár, István Major, Eszter Melis, Róbert Patay, Géza Szabó, Tamás Hajdu, István Futó, Róbert Huszánk, Viktória Kiss, Case Studies on the Radiocarbon Dating of Bronze Age Cremation Burials in Hungary, Bridging Science and Heritage in the Balkans: Studies in Archaeometry and Cultural Heritage Restoration and Conservation, pp. 29-37
Adoption and Evaluation of a sample Pretreatment Protocol for Radiocarbon Dating of Cremated Bones at Hekal
A comparative study was undertaken to adopt and evaluate a radiocarbon ( 14 C) preparation procedure for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measurements of cremated bones at our laboratory, including different types of archaeological samples (cremated bone, bone, charcoal, charred grain). All 14 C analyses were performed using the EnvironMICADAS AMS instrument at the Hertelendi Laboratory of Environmental Studies (HEKAL) and the ancillary analys…
The Beaker phenomenon and the genomic transformation of northwest Europe
A cemetery of the Gáta–Wieselburg culture at Nagycenk (Western Hungary)
The 29 individuals found in 27 graves at Nagycenk were buried there in the time period between 2000–1700 BC, according to radiocarbon dates – i.e. at the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age in Hungary. The cemetery is of unique importance, both because of the richness of burial assemblages (altogether 30 bronze objects, 5 gold jewelries) and the scarcity of known Gáta–Wieselburg cemeteries. 15 percent of the ca. 180 burials in total, which relate …
Material evidence of warfare in Early and Middle Bronze Age Hungary
This chapter reviews the material evidence for violence in Early and Middle Bronze Age Hungary. This evidence can be categorised into a number of classes, such as weapons, fortifications, skeletal evidence for physical trauma and 'mass graves'. The chapter discusses the weapons in terms of type, context and function. The context of weapons can provide invaluable data for the study of Bronze Age violence, the function of weapons and possibly the o…
Population genomics of Bronze Age Eurasia
The Bronze Age of Eurasia (around 3000–1000 BC) was a period of major cultural changes. However, there is debate about whether these changes resulted from the circulation of ideas or from human migrations, potentially also facilitating the spread of languages and certain phenotypic traits. We investigated this by using new, improved methods to sequence low-coverage genomes from 101 ancient humans from across Eurasia. We show that the Bronze Age w…
A mészbetétes edények népe késői fázisának sírlelete Veszprémből
