  • Climate change and health

Open Access•Eric S Coker, Susan Stone et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

With the growing climate change crisis, public health agencies and practitioners must increasingly develop guidance documents addressing the public health risks and protective measures associated with multi-hazard events. Our Policy and Practice Review aims to assess current public health guidance and related messaging about co-exposure to wildfire smoke and extreme heat and recommend strengthened messaging to better protect people from these cli…

  • Public Health Messaging for Wildfire Smoke

    Open Access•Erin M Shellington, Phuong D M Nguyen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Wildfire smoke events are increasing in British Columbia (BC), Canada and environmental and public health agencies are responsible for communicating the health-related risks and mitigation strategies. To evaluate and identify opportunities for improving public communications about wildfire smoke and associated health risks we collaborated with end-users and developed a 32-question online survey. The survey was deployed province-wide from 29 Septe…

  • Transmission dynamics of Sars-CoV-2 in British Columbia’s largest school district during the second half of the 2020–2021 school year

Open Access•Laurence Campeau, Frances Thistlethwaite et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2022•References: 22

In-school acquisition of COVID-19 was uncommon during the study period. Risk factors were identified in order to support the implementation of mitigation strategies that can reduce transmission further

  • Improving attribution of extreme heat deaths through interagency cooperation

Open Access•Sarah B Henderson, Félix Lamothe et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2022•References: 9

Attributing individual deaths to extreme heat events (EHE) in Canada and elsewhere is important for understanding the risk factors, protective interventions, and burden of mortality associated with climate change. However, there is currently no single mechanism for identifying individual deaths due to EHE and different agencies have taken different approaches, including (1) vital statistics coding based on medical certificates of death, (2) proba…

  • Staying Ahead of the Epidemiologic Curve

Open Access•Sarah B Henderson, Kathryn Morrison et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Background: The modular British Columbia Asthma Prediction System (BCAPS) is designed to reduce information burden during wildfire smoke events by automatically gathering, integrating, generating, and visualizing data for public health users. The BCAPS framework comprises five flexible and geographically scalable modules: (1) historic data on fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) concentrations; (2) historic data on relevant health indicator counts; …

  • Variability in ambient ozone and fine particle concentrations and population susceptibility among Canadian health regions

Open Access•David M Stieb, Jiayun Yao et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 17

A substantial proportion of the Canadian population exhibits at least one risk factor that increases their susceptibility to adverse effects of O 3 and PM 2.5 exposure. Both risk communication and management interventions need to be increasingly targeted to regions outside large urban centres in the highest quartiles of both susceptibility and exposure

  • Assessment of the Air Quality Health Index (Aqhi) and four alternate Aqhi-Plus amendments for wildfire seasons in British Columbia

Open Access•Jiayun Yao, Dave Stieb et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 25

  • Prevalence of non-food allergies among British Columbia residents from different countries of origin

Open Access•Angela Randall, Jane A Buxton et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2017•References: 2

  • Prevalence of non-food allergies among non-immigrants, long-time immigrants and recent immigrants in Canada

    Open Access•Jiayun Yao, Hind Sbihi•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 24
