Sharing Rural Health Perspectives
People living in rural Australia experience poorer health outcomes and have reduced access to health services compared with people living in metropolitan areas. Despite guidelines supporting consumer involvement in research, there is low involvement of rural people in health and medical research. Australia’s first Rural Health Consumer Panel (RHCP), established in 2022, assists researchers in gaining a deeper understanding of rural and regional A…
Feasibility of scaling-up an evidence-based physical activity behaviour change intervention into routine ambulatory hospital care
H4U-AS suggests that implementing an evidence-based PA intervention from one regional hospital to five rural hospitals may be feasible. Participants improved PA and dietary behaviours. However, limited participant recruitment during the short recruitment period, and funding cessation, impacted the extent to which the program could be offered and evaluated at scale
A Comparison of an Australian First Nations Primary Healthcare Data Specification with Potentially Preventable Hospitalisations
Potentially Preventable Hospitalisations (PPH) is a widely used indicator of the effectiveness of non-hospital care. Specified using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding, PPH comprises a suite of health conditions that could have potentially been prevented with appropriate care. The most recent edition of the National Guide to a Preventative Health Assessment for First Nations People documents the health conditions of interes…
Health and Wellbeing of Regional and Rural Australian Healthcare Workers during the Covid-19 Pandemic
Regional/rural healthcare workers in Victoria, Australia, were experiencing a moderate to high degree of psychological distress during the early stages of the pandemic. However, most participants demonstrated a normal/high degree of resilience. Findings will be used to inform policy options to support healthcare workers in responding to future pandemics
The Utility of Data Collected as Part of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Performance Framework
Since 2006, the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Performance Framework (HPF) reports have provided information about Indigenous Australians' health outcomes. The HPF was designed, in consultation with Indigenous stakeholder groups, to promote accountability and inform policy and research. This paper explores bridging the HPF as a theoretical construct and the publicly available data provided against its measures. A whole-of…
A five year descriptive analysis of potentially preventable hospitalisations for Ear, Nose, and Throat conditions in regional Victoria, Australia, from 2015 to 2020
Further investigation of the identified postcodes is warranted to determine access to and utilisation of primary healthcare services in the management of PPH ENT conditions in the region
“Exercise Is My Medicine”
Background: Hospital clinicians are increasingly encouraged to use outpatient consultations as an avenue to deliver opportunistic health promotion. There is a dearth of evidence regarding the acceptance of health promotion initiatives from hospital patients themselves. Methods: We explored the experiences of non-admitted patients who, during a routine consultation with a hospital surgeon received a recommendation to increase physical activity (PA…
Benchmarking gambling screens to health-state utility
Gambling screens have hitherto provided nominal category membership, it has been unclear whether moderate or 'at-risk' scores imply meaningful impact, and accordingly, population surveys have typically focused on problem gambling prevalence. These results quantify the health utility decrement for each category, allowing for tracking of the aggregate population impact based on all affected gamblers
Exploring the ability of self-report measures to identify risk of high treatment burden in chronic disease patients
This study supports previous observations that psychosocial factors may be more influential than specific diagnoses for multimorbid patients in managing their treatment workload. A simple capacity measure may be useful to identify those who are likely to struggle with healthcare demands
The Effect of a Physical Activity Coaching Intervention on Accelerometer-Measured Sedentary Behaviours in Insufficiently Physically Active Ambulatory Hospital Patients
Little is known about the impact that physical activity (PA) coaching interventions have on sedentary behaviours. The aim of this study was to investigate if a coaching intervention that increases PA coincidentally influences objectively measured sedentary time in insufficiently physically active adults. We recruited 120 insufficiently physically active ambulatory hospital patients and randomized them to either receive a PA coaching intervention …
Identifying tobacco retailers in the absence of a licensing system
The database of tobacco retailers was inaccurate in two ways: (1) a number of listed retailers no longer operated or sold tobacco, and (2) 43.2% of businesses confirmed as selling tobacco were missing. As no form of licensing system exists in Victoria, it is difficult to identify the number of retailers operating, or to determine how many receive formal regulatory oversight. A positive licensing system is recommended to regulate the sale of tobac…
Is sleep duration associated with overweight/obesity in Indigenous Australian adults
Adding to reports relating sleep duration and BMI for Australian adults, this study provides evidence for an inverse relationship in non-Indigenous adults and suggests a similar trend for Indigenous adults. This trend was non-significant but is consistent with previous results for Indigenous children
Levels of support for the licensing of tobacco retailers in Australia
A clear majority of the public support a tobacco retailer licensing system, regardless of whether or not such a system is already in place in their jurisdiction of residence. Tobacco control initiatives other than a retailer licensing system may explain some of the residual variations in support observed between jurisdictions
Integrated motivational interviewing and cognitive behaviour therapy can increase physical activity and improve health of adult ambulatory care patients in a regional hospital
ANZCTR: ACTRN12616001331426 . Registered 23 September 2016
A comparison of age-standardised event rates for acute and chronic coronary heart disease in metropolitan and regional/remote Victoria
Annual decreases in acute CHD age-standardised event rates might reflect improvements in primary prevention, while annual increases in chronic CHD age-standardised event rates suggest a need to improve secondary prevention strategies. Consistently higher acute and chronic CHD age-standardised event rates were evident in regional/remote Victoria compared to metropolitan Victoria from 2005 to 2012
Burden of disease and injury in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
BACKGROUND: Disparities in health status between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the total Australian population have been documented in a fragmentary manner using disparate health outcome measures. METHODS: We applied the burden of disease approach to national population health datasets and Indigenous-specific epidemiological studies. The main outcome measure is the Indigenous health gap, i.e. the difference between current rat…
