Level 17 is the principal Cantabrian Lower Magdalenian horizon in the outer vestibule area of El Mirón Cave, dating by radiocarbon to c. 15,500 uncal bp. It has yielded very rich faunal and artifactual collections associated with numerous hearths and abundant fire-cracked rocks. Among the many osseous artifacts are a striation-engraved red deer scapula and a spearthrower reported on elsewhere. This article presents a description and preliminary t…

  • The Human Occupations of El Mirón Cave (Ramales De La Victoria, Cantabria, Spain) During the Last Glacial Maximum/Solutrean Period

    Open Access•L G Straus, Manuel R González-Morales et al.•ARTICLE•Espacio Tiempo y Forma Serie I…•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 1

El Mirón Cave (Ramales de la Victoria, Cantabria, Spain) has evidence of brief visits (by hunting parties) to the montane zone of the upper Asón valley in easternmost Cantabria during the Last Glacial Maximum with 14C dates ranging between 19.2-18.4 kya uncal BP. Landscapes were largely treeless (scattered pines), with varying degrees of humidity and some amelioration at the end of the sequence of seven levels. Armed with a variety of Solutrean f…

  • El Mirón Cave and the 14 C Chronology of Cantabrian Spain

    Open Access•L G Straus, Manuel R González-Morales et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2003•Cited by: 57•References: 6

Excavations since 1996 in the large El Mirón Cave in the Cantabrian Cordillera of northern Spain have revealed a cultural sequence of late Mousterian, early Upper Paleolithic, Solutrean, Magdalenian, Azilian, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze Age, and Medieval occupations. These components have been dated by 51 generally coherent radiocarbon determinations, all run by the Geochron labs, in association with the Lawrence Livermore labs fo…

  • Paleoclimate and intersite correlations from Late Pleistocene/Holocene cave sites

    Open Access•Brooks B Ellwood, Francis B Harrold et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2001

During the last 10 years or so, magnetic susceptibility (MS) measurements of cave sediments from archaeological sites have been used for intrasite correlation and paleoclimate estimation. This is possible, if the context is appropriate, because the MS of these sediments result from climate processes active outside caves causing variations in magnetic properties of the sediments ultimately accumulating inside of caves. Once deposited, these materi…

  • Sedimentological and stratigraphic observations in El Mirón, a late Quaternary cave site in the Cantabrian Cordillera, Northern Spain

    Open Access•L G Straus, Manuel R González-Morales et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2001•Cited by: 12•References: 2

El Mirón cave on the northern edge of the Cantabrian Cordillera is one of the first montane sites in this area to be the object of modern interdisciplinary research. Five excavation seasons have revealed an archaeological sequence attributable to the Medieval, Bronze, Chalcolithic, Neolithic, Mesolithic, Azilian, Magdalenian, and Solutrean periods, and early Upper and Middle Paleolithic levels have just been reached. Forty‐four radiocarbon ages r…
