  • Pollen‐based quantitative reconstructions of Holocene regional vegetation cover (plant‐functional types and land‐cover types) in Europe suitable for climate modelling

    Open Access•Anna‐Kari Trondman, A-K Trondman et al.•ARTICLE•Global Change Biology•2015

We present quantitative reconstructions of regional vegetation cover in north‐western Europe, western Europe north of the Alps, and eastern Europe for five time windows in the Holocene [around 6k, 3k, 0.5k, 0.2k, and 0.05k calendar years before present ( bp )] at a 1° × 1° spatial scale with the objective of producing vegetation descriptions suitable for climate modelling. The REVEALS model was applied on 636 pollen records from lakes and bogs to…

  • Modern pollen–plant richness and diversity relationships exist along a vegetational gradient in southern Norway

    Open Access•Vivian A Felde, Sylvia M Peglar et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The relationships between modern pollen and floristic plant richness, diversity and evenness are assessed using pollen assemblages and associated vegetation data from 52 lakes along an elevational and vegetational gradient in the Setesdal valley of south-central Norway. Various data transformations were applied to minimise bias in the vegetation and pollen datasets. Plant species were transformed to their pollen or spore equivalents to reduce tax…

  • The relationship between vegetation composition, vegetation zones and modern pollen assemblages in Setesdal, southern Norway

    Open Access•Vivian A Felde, Sylvia M Peglar et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•References: 11

Reconstructing and interpreting past vegetation composition can be enhanced by studying modern pollen samples and contemporary vegetation. Here, we compare pollen in surface sediments from 52 medium-sized lakes with the surrounding vegetation along an elevational gradient covering six major vegetation zones in south-central Norway. The aims are to detect how well the vegetational composition and terrestrial pollen assemblages distinguish the majo…

  • Holocene land-cover reconstructions for studies on land cover-climate feedbacks

Open Access•M-J Gaillard, Marie‐José Gaillard et al.•ARTICLE•Climate of the Past•2010

The major objectives of this paper are: (1) to review the pros and cons of the scenarios of past anthropogenic land cover change (ALCC) developed during the last ten years, (2) to discuss issues related to pollen-based reconstruction of the past land-cover and introduce a new method, REVEALS (Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites), to infer long-term records of past land-cover from pollen data, (3) to present a new project (…

  • A palaeobotanical investigation of the sediments from the West Runton Mammoth site

    Open Access•Michael H Field, Sylvia M Peglar•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2010

  • Holocene forest development along the Setesdal valley, southern Norway, reconstructed from macrofossil and pollen evidence

    Open Access•Wenche Eide, Hilary H Birks et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2005•Cited by: 22•References: 8

  • Quantitative multiproxy assessment of long-term patterns of Holocene environmental change from a small lake near Abisko, northern Sweden

    Open Access•Christian Bigler, Isabelle Larocque et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Cited by: 12•References: 7

Quantitative reconstructions are made of Holocene changes in climatic and environmental conditions from analyses of pollen, chironomids and diatoms in identical stratigraphic levels of a sediment core from Vuoskkujávri (68°20'43 N, 19°06'00 E, 348 m a.s.l.) near Abisko in northern Sweden (Lapland). Transfer functions, based on regional calibration sets, are applied to reconstruct Holocene patterns in mean July air temperature (using all three ind…

  • C Dating of Laminated Sediments from Loch Ness, Scotland

    Open Access•M C Cooper, P E O'Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•References: 10

Radiometric and AMS radiocarbon dating of a 6-m sediment core from Loch Ness, Scotland, indicates that it represents perhaps the very end of the Late Pleistocene, and the first ca. 7500 yr of the Holocene. Counts of laminations observed in the Holocene section of the core suggest that they are present in sufficient number to constitute annual laminations (varves), an hypothesis consistent with the pollen record, which contains a sequence of zones…

  • The mid-Holocene Ulmus decline at Diss Mere, Norfolk, UK

    Open Access•Sylvia M Peglar•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1993•Cited by: 14•References: 6

3 m of annually laminated sediments were recovered from a small steep-sided lake, Diss Mere, Norfolk, UK. In an 8 cm section, known to include the mid-Holocene 'elm decline', the laminae were sampled separately, as far as possible, resulting in 181 samples covering 252 years. Relative pollen percentages, pollen influx, and charcoal were analysed. They show evidence of two phases of human disturbance within the woodland around the Mere, the first …

  • Mid- and late-Holocene vegetation history of Quidenham Mere, Norfolk, UK interpreted using recurrent groups of taxa
