  • Holocene relationships between climate, waterfowl, and lacustrine nutrient cycling at Kettle Lake, North Dakota, USA

    Open Access•Nicole K Murray, Jessica L Conroy et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•References: 5

Avian populations can substantially influence lacustrine nutrient loading and biogeochemical cycling through guano deposition. Here, we examine the influence of climate-forced avian migration throughout the Holocene on Kettle Lake, North Dakota, using stable nitrogen and carbon isotope values (δ 15 N, δ 13 C) of lake sediment organic matter. Carbon content and δ 13 C values are negatively correlated with δ 15 N and appear to be driven by changes …

  • Environmental history of a closed-basin lake in the US Great Plains

    Open Access•William O Hobbs, Sherilyn C Fritz et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Sediment records from closed-basin lakes in the Northern Great Plains (NGP) of North America have contributed significantly to our understanding of regional paleoclimatology. A high-resolution (near decadal) fossil diatom record from Kettle Lake, ND, USA that spans the last 8500 cal. yr BP is interpreted in concert with percent abundance of aragonite in the sediment as an independent proxy of groundwater flow to the lake (and thus lake water leve…

  • Lateglacial and Holocene hydroclimate inferred from a groundwater flow-through lake, Northern Rocky Mountains, USA

    Open Access•Mark D Shapley, Emi Ito et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2009•References: 9

Climate-driven variations in lake-groundwater exchange are recorded by sediments in groundwater-dominated lakes. A groundwater flow-through lake in west-central Montana (USA) registers latest Pleistocene and Holocene hydroclimatic variation in fluid and solute balance, as controlled by rates and timing of groundwater recharge. Early Holocene warming occurred under conditions of relative aridity and low groundwater throughflow, punctuated by a c. …

  • Episodic struvite deposits in a Northern Great Plains flyway lake

    Open Access•Joseph J Donovan, Eric C Grimm•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 2

A series of 34 layers of struvite (hydrous Mg-ammonium-phosphate) were deposited in laminated sediments of Kettle Lake, North Dakota, in the Northern Great Plains, USA. Sedimentologic, mineralogic and nitrogen isotopic evidence suggest that struvite was deposited during nutrient-enriched eutrophication events within a Mg-rich lacustrine environment. The struvite layers are dispersed between 4650 and 8700 cal. yr BP, with particularly high frequen…
