  • Tectonism and volcanism enhanced by deglaciation events in southern Iceland

    Open Access•Brigitte Van Vliet‐Lanoë, Françoise Bergerat et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2020

Southern Iceland is one of the main outlets of the Icelandic ice sheet and is subject to seismicity of both tectonic and volcanic origins along the South Iceland Seismic Zone (SISZ). A sedimentary complex spanning Marine Isotopic Stage 6 (MIS 6) to the present includes evidence of both activities. It includes a continuous sedimentary record since the Eemian interglacial period, controlled by a rapid deglaciation, followed by two marine glacioisos…

  • Middle Pleistocene seismically induced clay diapirism in an intraplate zone, western Brittany, France

    Open Access•Brigitte Van Vliet-Lanoë, Brigitte Van Vliet‐Lanoë et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

The Brittany region of France is located in a low seismicity intraplate zone. Most of the instrumented earthquakes are limited to a shallow crustal depth without surface rupture. A paleoseismological analysis was performed on deposits on the Crozon Peninsula and in the Elorn estuary. We highlight hydroplastic deformations induced by liquefaction leading to clay diapirism, which were likely triggered by past earthquakes. This diapirism seems to be…

  • Coastal palaeoenvironmental record of the last 7 kyr BP in NW France

    Open Access•Assia Fernane, Emmanuel Gandouin et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 19

To date, Holocene palaeoecological signatures on the Northwestern coast of France have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, environmental changes related to both climate processes and human disturbances were reconstructed over the last 7000 cal. yr BP, based on pollen and chironomid assemblages from four coastal cores retrieved in Western Brittany (Porsmilin beach, NW France). Pollen and chironomid records show an environmental respon…

  • Middle- to late-Holocene storminess in Brittany (NW France)

    Open Access•Brigitte Van Vliet-Lanoë, Brigitte Van Vliet‐Lanoë et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 11

This study focuses on the recurring climate conditions required for the largest storms occurring in NW France (Brittany). It is based on the analysed records of storm events along Western Brittany coast (see Part I). In this manuscript (Part II), storm recurrence is explored along with forcing mechanisms. Periods of more frequent storm events over the two last centuries are analysed first in order to link these events with possible forcing mechan…

  • Middle- to late-Holocene storminess in Brittany (NW France)

    Open Access•Brigitte Van Vliet-Lanoë, Brigitte Van Vliet‐Lanoë et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Our study aims to understand the recurring climatic conditions prevailing during the largest storms reaching NW France (Brittany). These storms are responsible for the breaching of coastal barriers and major flooding of lowlands. In a first part of our work, we examine the morphological impact and stratigraphic record of storm events along Western Brittany rocky coasts, with a special focus on the southern coast of the Bay of Audierne, the most e…

  • Provenance of freshwater pulses in the Gulf of Mexico during the last deglaciation

    Open Access•Thomas Sionneau, Viviane Bout‐Roumazeilles et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2010

During the last deglaciation, the decaying Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) delivered huge volumes of meltwater toward the Gulf of Mexico. The present investigation of clay mineralogy and grain-size characteristics of terrigenous sediments deposited in the Orca Basin (Gulf of Mexico) offers a unique opportunity to link the marine record of these meltwater floods with the reconstructed continental glacial history and the modeled drainage patterns. Five …

  • Chironomid responses (Insect

    Open Access•Emmanuel Gandouin, Philippe Ponel et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•References: 21

Lateglacial to Holocene subfossil chironomids from the St-Omer basin at St-Momelin (northern France) were analysed. At the end of the Lateglacial, stratigraphic and chironomid sequences indicate a shallow, oligotrophic and slow-flowing freshwater stream, with abundant aquatic macrophytic vegetation. Cold-water adapted taxa indicate a cold climate. During the early Holocene, from about 9500 to 7700 conventional radiocarbon yr BP, climate improveme…

  • L’abri sous-roche du Rozel (France, Manche)

Brigitte Van Vliet‐Lanoë, Dominique Cliquet et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternaire•2006•Cited by: 6•References: 3

  • Stratigraphy, age and formation of peaty earth hummocks (pounus), Finnish Lapland

    Open Access•Brigitte Van Vliet-Lanoë, Brigitte Van Vliet‐Lanoë et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•References: 1

Detailed investigations of peaty earth hummocks called pounus were carried out in northemmost Finnish Lapland in the vicinity of the Kevo Subarctic Research Station. Pounus are complex, often vegetated, cryogenic mounds formed partly of peat. Some have a core of mineral soil or several large stones, or just one frost-heaved boulder covered by peat. They belong to the same group of earth hummocks as thufur and non-sorted circles. The typology of p…

The site of Hénin-sur-Cojeul (Pas- de-Calais) includes loessic deposits corresponding to the Middle Pleni- glacial (Weichselian) (isotopic stage 3). Occupation levels are preserved in a fossil soil complex interpreted as Hengelo and Denekamp intersta- dials. Pollen analysis shows the development of Betula in a steppe-like vegetation. The oldest 14C date gives 37 900 ± 1 800 years BP. The faunal remains are dominated by Bison. The lithics series a…
