  • Glacial geomorphology of the Notsarula and Chanchakhi river valleys, Georgian Caucasus

Open Access•Levan G Tielidze, Joanna Charton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

Detailed glacial geomorphological maps are valuable for identifying target sites for palaeoglaciological reconstructions and thus for palaeoclimate inferences. In this study, we present the first detailed glacial geomorphological mapping of the landform assemblages produced by the former glaciers in the Notsarula (4245 44 N 4338 29 E) and Chanchakhi (4242 5 N 4340 42 E) river valleys, Georgian Caucasus. Our goal is to create a highresolution (1:33,…

  • Variations of heat availability in the Western Caucasus in the past 1500 years inferred from a high-resolution record of bromine in the sediment of Lake Karakel

  • Late-Holocene advances of the Greater Azau Glacier (Elbrus area, Northern Caucasus) revealed by 14 C dating of paleosols

    Open Access•Olga N Solomina, A L Alexandrovskiy et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022

Three paleosols buried in the left lateral moraines of the Greater Azau Glacier (Northern Caucasus) were identified in an excavated outcrop (43.2658 N, 42.4766 E, 2370 m a.s.l.). When the glacier was overlying the surface of the lateral moraines at this site, the thickness of the ice was 50 m and more above the valley floor. Fragments of charcoal from the uppermost soil (S1) buried 0.6 m below the surface yielded the radiocarbon date 130 ± 20 yr …

  • The Holocene paleoenvironmental history of Western Caucasus (Russia) reconstructed by multi-proxy analysis of the continuous sediment sequence from Lake Khuko

    Open Access•А М Грачев, Елена Новенко et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 9

This paper presents new multi-proxy records of the Holocene environmental and climatic changes in the Western Caucasus revealed from a continuous sediment sequence from mountainous Lake Khuko (Caucasus State Natural Biospheric Reserve, 1744 m a.s.l.). Palaeoecological analyses of a sediment core for grain size, magnetic susceptibility, loss on ignition, and pollen allowed us to determine five principal climatic phases with several subphases since…

  • European warm-season temperature and hydroclimate since 850 CE

Open Access•Fredrik Charpentier Ljungqvist, Andrea Seim et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

The long-term relationship between temperature and hydroclimate has remained uncertain due to the short length of instrumental measurements and inconsistent results from climate model simulations. This lack of understanding is particularly critical with regard to projected drought and flood risks. Here we assess warm-season co-variability patterns between temperature and hydroclimate over Europe back to 850 CE using instrumental measurements, tre…

  • European summer temperatures since Roman times

    Open Access•Jürg Luterbacher, J Werner et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

The spatial context is criticalwhen assessing present-day climate anomalies, attributing them to potential forcings and making statements regarding their frequency and severity in a long-term perspective. Recent international initiatives have expanded the number of high-quality proxy-records and developed new statistical reconstruction methods. These advances allow more rigorous regional past temperature reconstructions and, in turn, the possibil…

  • Diverse growth trends and climate responses across Eurasia’s boreal forest

Open Access•Lena Hellmann, Leonid Agafonov et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

The area covered by boreal forests accounts for 16% of the global and 22% of the Northern Hemisphere landmass. Changes in the productivity and functioning of this circumpolar biome not only have strong effects on species composition and diversity at regional to larger scales, but also on the Earth's carbon cycle. Although temporal inconsistency in the response of tree growth to temperature has been reported from some locations at the higher north…

  • Continental-scale temperature variability during the past two millennia

    Open Access•Moinuddin Ahmed, PAGES 2k Consortium et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Geoscience•2013

Open Access•Heinz Wanner, Olga N Solomina et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2011

  • Changes in mountain glaciers in Northeast Russia from the little ice age to the mid‐20th century

    Olga N Solomina, Ye S Filatov•ARTICLE•Polar Geography•1998

The authors assess the retreat of the poorly studied glaciers of the Russian Northeast from their maximum extent during the Little Ice Age, utilizing remote sensing and historical data. The basic indices of change utilized were the linear distance from the end of the glacier to its moraine and the difference in absolute elevations of the end of the glacier and the moraine; these were calculated for 23 glaciers in the Kodar Range, 37 glaciers in t…

  • Fluctuations of local glaciers in the southern ranges of the former USSR

  • Glaciers and Climate of the Mountains of the Former USSR during the Neoglacial

    Open Access•Leonid R Serebryanny, Olga N Solomina•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•1996

The problems of late-Holocene, or Neoglacial, climate cooling and the advance of glaciers are discussed with case studies from the main mountain systems of the former USSR: Caucasus, Pamiro-Alai, Tien Shan, Altai, Sayan, Polar Urals, mountains of northeastern Yakutia, and Kamchatka. The greatest uncertainty lies in the difference between palynological and geomorphological assessments. Pollen data reveal increased cooling and humidity during the l…

  • Late-Holocene glacier variations in the frontal and inner ranges of the Tian Shan, central Asia

    Open Access•Oxana S Savoskul, Olga N Solomina•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1996•Cited by: 3

Evidence for the timing and extent of late-Holocene glacial advances in the Tian Shan mountains, central Asia, is based on lichenometric and radiocarbon dating of end-moraines. Three phases of glacial advance occurred at 1700-2100 and 1100-1300 lichenometric (L) years ago, and then during the 'Little Ice Age', 150- 700 (L) years ago. Differences in the pattern of glacier variations between the northwestern frontal and inner areas of the Tian Shan…

  • Glacier variations, mudflow activity and landscape development in the Aksay Valley (Tian Shan) during the late Holocene

    Open Access•Olga N Solomina, Oxana S Savoskul et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1994

The object of this paper is to reconstruct the history of glaciation and the dynamics of mudflow activity as part of the development of landscapes in the Aksay Valley, Kirgizsky Ridge, over the last 2000 years. Glacial, mudflow and slope deposits were dated by lichenometry and the radiocarbon method. The results of 14C dating of buried soils shows that at about 1700 BP a period of activization of slope processes took place in the valley. The zone…
