Spatially heterogeneous and neighborhood impacts of deep tubewells on childhood diarrhea in rural Bangladesh
Deep tubewells that procure groundwater from deep arsenic-free aquifers are crucial sources of safe drinking-water in rural Bangladesh. However, their health benefits may be heterogeneous and context dependent: inequitable distribution, long collection distances and continued use of unsafe alternatives may increase microbial contamination and diarrheal disease. We examined whether the association between household deep tubewell use and under-five…
Considering Alternate Pathways of Drinking-Water Contamination
Deep tubewells are a key component of arsenic mitigation programs in rural Bangladesh. Compared to widely prevalent shallow tubewells, deep tubewells reduce ground-water arsenic exposure and provide better microbial water quality at source. However, the benefits of clean drinking-water at these more distant sources may be abated by higher levels of microbial contamination at point-of-use. One such potential pathway is the use of contaminated surf…
Post‐flood nutritional anthropometry of children in Matlab, Bangladesh
The Matlab area was severely affected by the floods of 1988 in Bangladesh. To assess the impact of flooding in Matlab the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) performed post‐flood surveys. Six‐hundred households were surveyed. In addition, length, weight, and mid‐upper arm circumference were measured in children aged 6–35 months. Baseline economic status appeared to be higher inside the Matlab embankment, whe…
Transferring Health and Family Planning Service Innovations to the Public Sector
The International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, has launched a field experiment in two rural thanas of Bangladesh to test the transferability of its successful health and family planning experiment in Matlab to the Ministry of Health and Population Control service system. This paper reviews the Matlab experiment with particular attention to its organization and identifies elements for transfer. The intervention strategy and …
