  • Environmental variability off NE Greenland (western Fram Strait) during the past 10,600 years

    Open Access•Marc Zehnich, Robert F Spielhagen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 11

To reconstruct the climatic and paleoceanographic variability offshore Northeast Greenland during the last ~10 ka with multidecadal resolution, sediment core PS93/025 from the outermost North-East Greenland continental shelf (80.5°N) was studied by a variety of micropaleontological, sedimentological and isotopic methods. High foraminiferal fluxes, together with high proportions of ice-rafted debris and high Ca/Fe ratios, indicate a maximum in bio…

  • Submarine geomorphology at the front of the retreating Hansbreen tidewater glacier, Hornsund fjord, southwest Spitsbergen

Open Access•Joanna Ćwiąkała, Mateusz Moskalik et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2018

A 1:10,000 scale bathymetric map as well as 1:20,000 scale backscattering and geomorphological maps of two bays Isbjrnhamna and Hansbukta in the Hornsund fjord (Spitsbergen) present the submarine relief that was primarily formed during and after the retreat of the Hansbreen tidewater glacier. Geomorphological mapping was performed using multibeam bathymetric data and seismoacoustic profiling. The identified landforms include two types of transver…

  • Sea ice and primary production proxies in surface sediments from a High Arctic Greenland fjord

    Open Access•Sofia Ribeiro, Mikael K Sejr et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2017•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 42

In order to establish a baseline for proxy-based reconstructions for the Young Sound-Tyrolerfjord system (Northeast Greenland), we analysed the spatial distribution of primary production and sea ice proxies in surface sediments from the fjord, against monitoring data from the Greenland Ecosystem Monitoring Programme. Clear spatial gradients in organic carbon and biogenic silica contents reflected marine influence, nutrient availability and river-…

  • Sedimentary ancient DNA from Lake Skartjørna, Svalbard

    Open Access•Inger G Alsos, Per Sjögren et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 12

Reconstructing past vegetation and species diversity from arctic lake sediments can be challenging because of low pollen and plant macrofossil concentrations. Information may be enhanced by metabarcoding of sedimentary ancient DNA ( sedaDNA). We developed a Holocene record from Lake Skartjørna, Svalbard, using sedaDNA, plant macrofossils and sediment properties, and compared it with published records. All but two genera of vascular plants identif…

  • Late Weichselian and Holocene sedimentary palaeoenvironment and glacial activity in the high-arctic van Keulenfjorden, Spitsbergen

    Open Access•Philipp Kempf, Matthias Forwick et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 16

High-arctic fjords, for example, van Keulenfjorden on Spitsbergen, provide valuable palaeoenvironmental archives as they typically contain landforms and sediment sequences that document past changes in glacial activity with high temporal resolution. Van Keulenfjorden was covered with a grounded glacier during the last glacial, and it was deglaciated between c. 11.8 and 11.3 cal. ka BP. The retreat of the ice front accelerated from approximately 8…

  • Holocene mass-transport activity and climate in outer Isfjorden, Spitsbergen

    Open Access•Matthias Forwick, Tore O Vorren•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

The analyses of high-resolution seismic data, swath bathymetry data and sediment cores from the basin Svensksunddjupet in Isfjorden, Spitsbergen, reveal the deposits of repeated slope failures. Most of the slope failures occurred during three periods at c. 9650 cal. BP, 8350—8200 cal. BP and 3000 cal. BP. Suggested factors causing instability of the slopes include earthquake activity resulting from rapid isostatic uplift, excess pore pressure cau…
