Identifying a Sample of HIV-Positive Beneficiaries From Medicaid Claims Data and Estimating Their Treatment Costs
Objectives. We sought to identify people living with HIV/AIDS from Medicare and Medicaid claims data to estimate Medicaid costs for treating HIV/AIDS in California. We also examined how alternate methods of identifying the relevant sample affect estimates of per capita costs. Methods. We analyzed data on Californians enrolled in Medicaid with an HIV/AIDS diagnosis reported in 2007 Medicare or Medicaid claims data. We compared alternative selectio…
Vocational Training with HIV Prevention for Ugandan Youth
Mamekhaya
Nearly 30% of pregnant women in South Africa are estimated to be HIV seropositive, yet adherence to guidelines for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) is often low. A pilot study was developed to see whether PMTCT services provided by the South African Government could be enhanced by the Mamekhaya program, a combination of the mothers2mothers peer-mentoring program and a culturally adapted cognitive-behavioral interventi…
Reducing HIV Risks Among Active Injection Drug and Crack Users
The efficacy of Safety Counts, a CDC-diffused intervention, was reanalyzed. In a quasi experimental, cross-over design, injection drug users (IDU) and crack users in two neighborhoods were assigned by neighborhood to receive individual Voluntary HIV Counseling and Testing or Safety Counts and 78% were reassessed at 5-9 months. Drug users in the Safety Counts program reported significantly greater reductions in risky sex, crack and hard drug use, …
Reducing Risky Sexual Behavior and Substance Use Among Currently and Formerly Homeless Adults Living With HIV
Objectives. We examined the efficacy of the Healthy Living Program in reducing risky sexual behavior and substance use among adults with HIV infection who were marginally housed (i.e., homeless at some point over a 37-month period). Methods. We had previously conducted a randomized controlled trial with 936 adults living with HIV infection. In that study, 3 intervention modules of 5 sessions each addressed different goals: reducing risky sexual a…
Leibowitz Et Al. Respond
In their comments regarding our article, Green et al. do not dispute our article's conclusion that a lack of Medicaid coverage for infant male circumcision discourages the use of this procedure. However, they differ sharply with us in their interpretation of whether this lack of coverage potentially impairs the health of poor infants. In an editorial published earlier this year,1 the same 4 individuals argued that the circumcision of infant males…
Determinants and Policy Implications of Male Circumcision in the United States
Objective. We sought to determine whether lack of state Medicaid coverage for infant male circumcision correlates with lower circumcision rates. Methods. We used data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample on 417 282 male newborns to calculate hospital-level circumcision rates. We used weighted multiple regression to correlate hospital circumcision rates with hospital-level predictors and state Medicaid coverage of circumcision. Results. The mean n…
