    Sevgi O Aral, W D Mosher et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•Cited by: 5•References: 7

BACKGROUND. Vaginal douching has been associated with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in several epidemiologic studies. METHODS. To determine the extent to which douching is practiced and to describe the population subgroups in which it is most prevalent, we analyzed data from the 1988 National Survey of Family Growth, which is based on a nationally representative sample of 8450 United States women between the ages of 15 and 44 years. • Women with multiple sexual partners

    Stuart N Seidman, W D Mosher et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•Cited by: 13•References: 22

Women who have multiple sexual partners in a short time period are appropriate targets for sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention. We analyzed survey data collected in 1988 from a nationally representative sample of 8450 American women aged 15 to 44 to identify markers of such behavior. Among sexually active persons, 0.4% of married women and 8.4% of unmarried women had two or more sexual partners in the 3 months preceding the interview; u…

  • Gonorrhea rates

    S O Aral, Suneeta Satpathy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1988•Cited by: 9•References: 5

We used traditional crude population denominators and four different definitions of sexual activity to calculate progressively more refined gonorrhea rates among reproductive age women. Refining denominators to take sexual activity into account had the largest impact on morbidity rates for young women. Traditional denominators severely underestimate gonorrhea rates in teenagers, and understate the real magnitude of gonorrhea risk among sexually a…

  • Estimates of pregnancies and pregnancy rates for the United States, 1976-85

    Stephanie J Ventura, S M Taffel et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1988•Cited by: 1•References: 7

After increasing by 9 per cent in the period 1976-80 in the United States, pregnancy rates declined by 4 per cent between 1980 and 1984 (from 111.9 to 107.3 pregnancies per 1,000 women aged 15-44 years). Between 1984 and 1985, the rate rose by less than 1 per cent to 108.2. More detailed data by age and race, available only through 1983, indicate that the decline in the 1980-83 period was not shared by all age groups. For example, pregnancy rates…

  • Self-reported pelvic inflammatory disease in the US

    Sevgi O Aral, W D Mosher et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1985•Cited by: 3•References: 13

Based on a nationally representative sample of American women of reproductive age, in 1982, one in seven reported having had pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). One in ten had received ambulatory care, and one in 25 were hospitalized for PID. A two-fold race differential was observed in self-reported history of PID. One in four Blacks compared to one in eight Whites reported having received treatment for this condition sometime in the past. The pr…
